LAWN TENNIS. RADICAL CHANGES PROPOSED IN
*N AMERICA.
A conference which may result in radical changes in American lawn tannis rules (states & Reuter message from New York) will be held in this city on February 8th in connection with the annual meet- ing of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association. Various committees will present their recommendations to delegates from all parts of the country: Revision of the playing rulea, adoption of
new plan of organisation and voting power for the Association, and approval pf a new system of competition for the national doubles championship are among the the more important matters to be con sidered:
ཛྙྰ་ ་་
In recommending a new code of rules, the committee. which, inolade 8 Wallia Merrihew, Richard N. Williams, Beals C. Wright, Abraham Bissford. Edward 0. Conlin, Samuel Hardy, and Watson M. Washburn, report conclusions reached after months of study. No effort has been spared to simplify the text, and the chaaras in working are extensive. The changes in meaning, however, involve only a few rules one being the sixth, relating to footfaults." This will be altered to rend:-
Before commencing to serve, the server shall stand with both feet at rest behind Ke. further from the net than the hase- line, and within the limits of the centra mark and the sideline Both feet shall b kant behind the base-line until the racket strikes the ball..
SCORING AND HANDICAPPING. The quggested method." of scoring eliminates the use of 15-30.""" love," "deuca" and similar terms, which have long been a part of the phraseology of the game, and counts on a point basis-one, two, three, etc-will be substituted. T
If the server wins the first points, it is called
"If the receiver wins the first point it is called "ona-out" If the sarver has won three points and the re- ceiver one. it is called "three-one" and. so on until either playar has won four points,
one-in."
If one player hoe four points and the other three points. the score is called "three-four or "four-three" as the enas may be, and the game is scored for the player who first thereafter gains a lead of two points.
In the new avstem of handicaps points are allotted to the players to be added to the points scored. At the end of the net. the allotted points are added to those scored and the players with a larger total wins the set, regardless of the games won
or lost
In the call for the meeting, the reports of thirty committees are scheduled. These deal with all aspects of the game, from its promotion among young players to a challenge for the David Cup in 1920-. Morning Post.
PAY IN THE NATY
ALL-ROUND), INCREASE FOR
OFFICERS.
UNEMPLOYMENT MONEY.
A recent Order in Council, which, with. the accompanying schedule fills no fewer than twenty-four pages of the "fiuzette," gives details of the concessions in pay to officers of all kinds in the Navy, the Re serve the Volunteer Reserve, the Marine, and the Air Service,
Embodying the recommendations of the Admiralty, it quotes then as saying "We are of opinion that officers of the Royal Marines should be treated, in regard to their emoluments during active service and Von retirement, similarly to naval officers, and further, that there should be one sealé of pay applicable to all such officers, whether belonging to the Royal Marine Artillery or to the Royal Marine'Light In- fantry, and whether serving at sea
shore."
A second and more important quotation runs thus:
or
The scales of pay, half-pay, and retired pay officers of your Majesty's, Noval and Marine Forces should be substantially in creased in the higher ranks in view of the altered economic conditions arising from. the war and for other reasons, and further; that rates of unemployed pay should be introduced for certain ranks during periods of unemployment not exceeding a year."
