St. John's Cathedral was crowded on the night of Good Friday to hear the Oratorio by a chair of nearly seventy voices, and it was the general opin ion that as musical effort we have bad, nothing in Hongkong to compare with it in recent years with the exception of the very successful rendering of "The Messiah" three years ago. Mr. Denman Fuller opened the Oratorio

with a readering of Elgar's "Medita- tion "Lux Christi), which he played with skill and sympathy.

One can hardly refrain from writing of the chorus in what may appear to be extravagant terma of praise, for their work was extremely well done. Mr. Fuller had chosen four of the works of a gifted American composer, H. B. Gaul, for the chorus, and except for the thought that obtruded itself occasionally that one or two of the pieces were a trifle too high for the range of the voices in the chorus, nothing can be said of the choice of the pieces or of their rendering but the fullest praise. There was more unison singing in the choruses than one is accustomed to in that class of work, but the parts were well balanced, and there was never a discordant note. As an illustration that gome of Gaul's music was too high for the Hongkong amateurs, it was noticeable that in the last chorus My help cometh from the Lord the contraltos had to come to the resete of the tenors, who could not sustain a high range. There were ten contraltos, ten tenors, fourteen bases and the rest were sopranos, and the harmony was perfect.

Of the solos, Mr. Howard Free born, who has an excellent and robust tenor voice, was greatly appre ciated in Gounod's "From Love us a Father" and As a spirit thou didat pass,' but in his duet."Love divine" with Mrs, Duncan, it was obvious that he had been given too much singing

to do.
