Why Viyella Flannel

{Reyd)

Because it at once overcomes all the familiar objections to ordinary flannels. In wear it is delightfully comfortable, so soft that it will not irritate the most sensitive skin;

light in texture, yet soydurable that it will stand the crudest methods of washing; moreover it will not shrink unless boiled.

For climates where days are hot and nights cold, or where temperature rapidly changes, it is perfect, because unlike coiton fabrics it not only absorbs bodily moisture, but readily radiates it, thus keeping the skin in the healthiest condition and avoiding chills. "Viyella" Flannel is absolutely British.

KAISER'S SINISTER DIAMOND. TRAGIO STORY OF THE "BLAZE

OF GLORY.”

A great and brilliant diamond, said by tradition to have been given by King Solomon to the Queen of Sheba, which, aftor a career of ainister influence, was incorporated in the Prussian royal regalla is the theme of a wonderful romance forwarded by the New York cor- respondent of the Central Newa,

B

The story of the Blaze of Glory," the stone was called, is perhaps the most fascinating in the history of famous. precious jewels.

Engraved on one side of the diamond, by the most cunning work, is the sacred sign of King Solomon, and an the roversa a devics attributed to the Queen of Bheba The story goes that the wise King, carried away by the charm of Sheba's ruler, plucked the jewel from his turban and gave it to the Queen.,

EFIN AND BLOODSKED.

Tales of the wonderful gem were arried by travellers into Persia, and the greed of the nomadic King" El Hakin II. was soon excited. Ho marched into the land of the unfortunate Queen, and robbed her body which had been mutilated by his soldiers, of the bloodstained jewel. Two weeks later the Shah was murdered by a subject in his royal palace.

And so, from year to year, the diamond wrought its evil influence on every ruler, potentate, prince and family, sooner or Inter which became associated with it Possession of the sinister gem spélt ruin, and often bloodshed, to the owner, and recent history seems to have continued its fateful tradition of misfortune.

BRANDENBURG'S PRIZE

In the Middle Ages, the Margrave for Marquis de Brandenburg, whose king dom was the nucleus around which sprang up the Prussian dynasty, in making one of his accustomed raids into the neighbouring country of Silesia, captured a Jewish merchant whose collection of goods contained the ill-starred diamond. Promptly the Kaiser's ancestor seized the shining gem and swore to make it. adorn the crown of a great kingdom, of which his family was to be the head.

Aware of the curse the diamond carried with it, the merchant ventured to warn the marquis, but for his boldness met his death by the ruler's orders on the castle walls the same night.

WILHELM WARNED. Apparently without great incident, the treasure was banded down from king to king until it came into the bands of the monarch now in exile at Amerongen.

It had gained the central position in the crown of the House of Frussia. Later heade of the dynasty appear to have lost Bight of the tradition attached to the gem which adorned their crown.

The keeper of the Prussian jewel-house, the late Herr Graff Zanked horn, a learn ed antiquarian, had, however, kept its. fatefal history in mind. He knew that. to the years between 1919 and 1022 waa assigned the climax in the awful record of misfortune and ruin marked out by the stone.

He implored his royal master to rid himself of the jewel when he was to be crowned King of Prussia. Wilhelm's reply was:

"You must understand that I am crowned by the spirit of God and the will of my people. The Hohenzollerns must endure for over. No curse of evil can harm our dynasty.".

So he was crowned with the Glory," and is to-day in eclipse."

"A PIONEER OF SCIENTIFIC

"RESEARCH.”

DEATH OF DR. C. R. LYSTER.

The death has taken place at the age of 60 years of Dr. Cecil & C. Later, who fell victim to his self-sacrificing devo tion to the work of X-ray research. The eldest son of the late Mr. A. O Lyster, of Abbey Wood, Kent, he received his medical education at Charing Cross Hos pital, where he acted as assistant medical offcer and obstetrie officer. For a time he was medical superintendent of Boling broke Hospital, and in 1902 went to the aliddies Respital in charge of the elec tric therapeutic department. He was a pioneer in X-ray investigation, particu larly in relation to the treatment of cancer, and latterly carried out much valuable research on the use of radium as remedial agent. In the earlier periods of his work comparatively little was known concerning the properties of X: raya and the means of preventing their hamafal action on the operator, and Dr. Lyster sustained serious injuries, but he always returned to his duties at the ear. liest possible moment, even after the most perious operation. He would have re coterou had he censed experimenting when his trouble began, but to him his work was everything, and to it he gave, first his health and than his life. Hesseri ficed finger after finger which had become affected as the result of his continued labours, till last November he was cora pelled to relinquish his post at the Mid alosex Hospital Speaking at the Court of Governors the Earl of Athlone, in-an- nouncing the fact said: "One of the pioneers of scientific research, Dr. Lyster, applied himself to the study of X-rays and their use in the treatment of disease especially cancer, and more recently be has been concerned in an attempt to deter mine the effects of radium, and to standardiss its applications as a remedial agent. He himself, by exposure to the rays in the early days whom the knowledge of their power was slight, fell a victim to the disease be sought to conquer; though Buffering and compelled frequently to neck 16 aufgods' said, be declined to be set aside from his purpose, and continued his good work until now, when work is for him no longer possible. Such a record of service for others, a life spent in the advancement of science, with no regard for personal safety, commands our zd miration, wonder and respect, and 1. ask you all to joia with me in sending 20 Dr. Lyster Bn expression of our desp and our carmest hope for his recovery. That hope was, however, not destined to be fullled
