GROWTH OF FEMINISM IN

JAPAN.

Just as the men in Japan are now busy demanding and agitating for uni- versal suffrage, so are woman equally active in their movements for the protec tion of their rights or for securing equal, privileges with men (says the Japan Chronicle). They are fast awakening to the inequality of the present social system in Japan which affords far greater privi- leges and advantages to men than women and they are now demanding a recen- struction of society. It is true that they have hitherto been famous, and in fact, much advertised, for their charming. obedience, which men demanded and still demand of them. Things are, however, rapidly changing, and the Japanese women, the enlightened aziong them at Icast, of whom there are at increasing number, are fast awakening to the new situation, as is shown by the varied activities observed from time to time,

artisularly of late, Reference has already been made to their movements for equal privileges with men in the matter of divorce, for their right to demand sexual continence on the part of hus- bands, for equal educational chances and facilities for the suffrage, and for the abolition of the prejudicial articles in the present Police Regulations which probibit women's participation in poli- tical or labour movements and even their Attendance at meetings of such a nature. Women of to-day are no longer content with their present position in which they. are required to reader absolute and blind obedience and servitude to the stronger sex, nor do they believe in, the right of men to keep supplementary wives, In the opinion of the women agitators, it is a disgrace and a shame for Japan to allow any longer the existence of the pre- sent social system, which enables the stronger sex to indulge in all sorts of immoral acts, to say nothing of many privileges and advantages which are 'given to men but which are denied

women.

Taking the case of matrimonial life, the custom of concubinage, though sane tioned by long use. is one which modern women will not tolerate. Men who keep extra establishments do not fail to demand absolute sexual purity from their wives,

Marriage without previous scquaint- ance is another custom now resented. It often happens that a maid serving in a family suddenly announces her desire to leave, and being asked why, she ex plains that she is getting married. Aaked whom she is getting married to, "she. states that does not know, but that her narents have selected a husband for her. The bower closses tako this as a matter of course. but the more educated object atrenuusly to it. Demonstrations or mass merings to protest against such dis abilities are renorted from all parts of the country, which, speak of the rapid developments that are taking place in the thoughts of women of late. Fortunately for the women, they are receiving the enthusiastic and generous support of the lending Japanese papers, which are very often the organisers of such mass meet- inz The Danka Asahi, for instance, held some time ago a grand women's mass meeting at the Central Public Hall, Nakanoshima, Osaka to which represen- tatives of women throughout the country, including many well-known ladies, were invited. The meeting was a great succtes, and the opinions and views expressed were published in the columns of the Osaka paper, which is one of the most influential and the most widely-read papers in Japan. It may be said that: the presant awakening of the Japanese women, which has assumed a more pro- nounced form of late, has been largely promoted by this mass meeting.

GOLF AS A NERVE TONIC,

་་་

Not the least of the remarkable fascina- tions of golf is its appeal to men who are training for sporting contesté.

A little while ago a writer on boxing referred to Willie Ritchie, who had con- fided to him that on the eve of a match he wished for nothing so much as a day's golf, Ritchie said he found it steadied his nerves, by which it may be supposed he meant that golf engrossed his atten- tion so fully that it enabled him to forget for the time all anxiety as to the impend ing issue in the ring.

frainers. of football teams have long. recognized the value of golf, more partí pilarly in Scotland, where there are tens of thousands of artisan golfers

Robert Walker, the Scottish inter- national, once said that he regarded golf as the finest training medium extent, taking the men out into the open air and giving a rest to the routine which has a tendency to defeat its own ends in its monotony.

So impressed were the directors of the Clyde Clab with the benefits their men dorived from play on the links that they bought a dozen season tickets for a Glasgow course and the players met there, in compotition twice a week.

Golf takes a definite part in the method. of training the players of the Glasgow. Hangers, and, what is more, many pro fessional footballers are good-class golf- ers. Most of them are enthusiasta
