INDUSTRY.
PROJECTED AMALGAMATION. a whole in those days is towards mutual The tendency of Japanese industry, as amalgamation on the principle that work done on a large scale saves an enormous amount of labour and expense, to say nothing of obviating extravagant and ruin- oas competition, (says the Japan Chrens cle), Everything from banking to fishing is similarly affected. The fashion is now being followed by the petroleum industry. The importance of petroleum for national defence is recognised and the Naval De partment has been endeavouring to make Japan independent in the supply of crude petroleum. Acting on this principle, it has for some time past been encouraging the Nippoa and the Hoden Petroleum Companies to amalgamate with each other. It will be remembered the Nippon Petrohm Company recently increased ita capital considerably, thereby forestall, ing the other company, which evidently, on account of this, has decided to post pone the projected increase of capital as already reported. It is, however, gener ally believed that the amalgamation of these two companies, which are the larg ent in Japan, is a question of time. The Hoden Petrolean Company will no doubt increase its present capital of 1,20,000,000 to Y.40,000,000 as the other company has done and when they amalgamate with each other, they will perhaps appear as a large ompany capitalised from Y.100,000,000
