WOMEN IN HONGKONG.

(Continued from page 8.)

There is a lull in the tempest of dancing this week. Badly wanted too! Last week, there were jolly little hops at the U.S.RO., at the Peak Hotel and the Peak Club, Then there were the usual tea and dinner dances at the Repulse Bay Hole!, with the glorious drive there and back. Several private dances are coming off a a sort of round-up for the winter season. A party of uncrackable knuts-which ments Bachelors--are giving a dinner and dance at the Repulse Bay Hotel and are providing the motor cars. Every one think it a most sporting venture.

The wife of the Taipan of one of the hig banking, "houses has issued invitations to

a very big ball a Kingsclere. The Races are coming, and so is China New Year, and during this month and next month, there | is to be a big exit of many well-known people taking long-deferred leave. Some of the young married women who are

circles Already the men complain of lack of partners. Oh, what would' not our sweet country wall-flowers give for a "winter season in Hongkongt. Every one is sorry for the military nurses, who are not allowed to dance. It does seem absurd in these days to curtail the liberty any grown-up responsible human being. You might as well join a religious order as the army nursing service. No one out here has any authority to modify the orders which, come from the Matron- in-chief at home, but I hear that this is likely to be the last year that this hard rule will be enforced. One can, of course, see the reason why dancing for nurses is disallowed. The profession is one that makes a great demand upon nerves and energy. I have known several hospitals where under lax discipline patients have suffered from being at the mercy of women who came on duty fagged out after dancing half the night. But to day, in most Government Hospitals," work has been reorganized on a system which enables nurses to have more time to themselves and better pay and pen- sions, so that both nurse and patients benefit Nursing is, a noble and fãs pro-t fession for the right, type of woman....It. eptails so much self-sacrifice and self- control that everything should be done to make the conditions as bearable and "attractive as possible.

...

I have just heard from a friend who is touring with Marie Tempest that the company is in India. I believe we ars to have them in Hongkong in March. The company is an excellent one. During her South African tour, Miss Tempest was warned of the disabilities she would have to contend with in the East, in the matter of staging, so with her well-known thoroughness she worked out a scheme to combat these difficulties and bad her scenery made up on curtains, with

ment and her productions are to the smallest detail

derful artistin effect. Her stage

shades,

flowers, chintzes, and cushions all blend

in her colour scheme, and she will search bigh and low to get what she wants, with as much cars is a woman furnishing a drawing room. Her dresses and those of her company harmonise with the sur roundings. I remember the occasion of my first interview with her. It was dur ing an interval in the performance of the "Duke of Killikrankie" and she' received me in her dressing room. I was so fascinated by her personality and her beautiful costume that it was difficult to atick to business. Our talk ranged over many experiences and across many lands. and she told me of her intention to visit the East. She spoke of the encourage ment shown to artists in America, and especially Chicago, where a society existe which launches plays by unknown writers and gives many a budding genius his chance in life. She told me how hard aha had worked to achieve her success, explaining that for a successful career on the stage, the training of every faculty is necessary. Elocution, voice production, physical culturo, exercises in memory and a deep study of literature and stage traditions are all part of the foundation of the structure constituting the equip ment of a real actress. When she play here in Cousin Kate." "Penelope, The Barn, and many other delightful plays, you will see for yourselves how wonder fully fresh her art is, in spite of her many years of success and fame. She started her stage career in musical comedy, took medals for singing and elocution an England and Italy, produced plays and run her own theatre, and is now touring the world and holding audiences apell bound with her charm and perfect acting
