A vory closo gathe between the Civil Service and the Staff and Departments ended in the former winning by seven rans. The Civil Service were strengthen- ed, by the inclusion of G. R. Bayer, who recently returned to the Colony, and W., Grimmett, who played last season- Craigengower, Sayer signalised his return by acoring 61 runs in pretty style, hit with freedom all round the wicket and gave the Staff bowlers a lot of trouble. The Civil Service batting was consistent and the total was raised to 142 runs. The Staff and Departments failed to overhaul their opponents' total, Grimmett, at one stage, having performed the hat trick." Cof. Humphrey's da was collected mainly from some nice drives to off and leg. Scores

THE FORTHCOMING RACES. SATURDAY MORNING'S GALLOPS.

A fasture of the gallops on Saturday was the increased number of ponies which had the trial runa. Racing enthusiata had a busy morning on the course, when h those of the late Mr. Kapetyn's ponies, Louza, Sinas and Spotted Sandt went ba the hammer Bidding was specially brisk for Louza, a very promising sub. It opened at $1,000, and eventually rose to $2,000, Mr. Moxon becoming the owner. Sinza was sold for $650 to Mr. Leafe, and General Auctioneers, Spotted Sand was purchased by Mr. Hoares for $1,350.

The match started very fast, with the Ambrose men attacking, but soon the civilians began to show their superiority and made incursions into the enemy ter- ritory where they came within an ace of scoring, but the goalie was very sound, and cleared in very convincing style. Attacks made by the sailors forwards wore foiled by Tonkin and Clark, who played very sound games at back, ably assisted by Railton at centre half. When the Club again attacked, a fine piece of combination was witnessed bolween Hamilton and Neal on the right wing, which ended in Neal sending in an accu- rate contro to Reichelmann, who trapped the ball cloverly, but was charged back by one of the sailors' back and robbed of possession. Reichelmann took the penalty kick which was awarded the Club and notched the rat goal. Play was very even after this until near the close of the. first half when the Club forwards again got going, and Neal put in a lofty shot which had the effect of drawing the goalie, who missed the ball which hit the cross-bar and" bounded right in front of goat Boysen, rushed in and netted the ball. The half time came with the Club leading by two goals to nil.

The second half was equally as fast as the first, with the Club doing all the attacking, but the sailors defended very Had not time intervened the Wiltshires wall, and the forwards found it vary would have inflicted a crushing defeat on hand to got within shooting range.
