HOW A CHINESE GIRL WAS

DUPED.

INTERESTING STORY RELATED. Į

SEMPATHY WITH A MAN LEADS TO VICTIMIZATION.

Sympathy for a Chinese, who related a story of a brother being arrested, led a girl to be victimind to the extent of over $1,000. The story was related at the Magistracy, yesterday, when a Chinese woman and three well-dressed and ap parently respectable young men were charged with conspiracy to defraud, in respect of & quantity of jewellery.

The woman alleged that, the jewellery was given her by the girl as an engage ment present.

00

Inspector Kent stated that the com- plainant lived with nor parenta Yaichai. She was a frequent visitor at Wo Ping Theatre, and at about the end of November last made the sequaintancy. of the woman, whom she met at thi

met theatre. They subsequently several occasions, and the woman invited the girl to her beuse where she was intro- duced to two of the male defendanta The visits to the house continued, and on December 24th. the girl went to Sincero's to purchase some goods and, there-met the woman and two of the malo defend anta. She was invited up to the roof garden where they had tea, and after a conversation the woman invited the girl to her house for a chat. The girl accom paaled the woman and the two men. After being in the house for about half an hour one of the men went out. He re tarned some time later and informed the people that he had just heard that his younger brother had been arrested for smuggling wine and that he required 8500 to be, deposited at the Harbour Office. The woman persuaded the girl to hand over two bracelets and a ring, all set with diamonds, and valued at $500, to the man, who then left the place. The girl went home and on the next day' she wenig back to the.oman's house and demanded the return of the jewellery, The woman told her that she would not be able to get back the jewellery for two or three days. On December 31st. the girl again asked for the return of her jewellery. The two men were present at the house and the woman informed the girl, that she had no money with her and that she would have to go to see the mother of one of the defendanta, She invited the girl to accompany her le Canton and the girl did so with a maid servant. They let for Canton by train, and when they

reached the plan they put up at the West

ern Hotel. One of the men stayed in the

servant, and in the evening the man to

told the girl that there were a lot of thieves in Canton and that it would be better for her to give him the jewellery she had, so that he could deposit it with the accountant of the hotel. The girl handed him the jewellery and he gave it to a clerk at the hotel.” The next morning the man told the others that he was leaving for the country to see his mother about the money and went away. As the man did not return, the girl became suspicious and went to the clerk, to take back her jewellery. She was then informed that the jewellery had been taken away by the man. The man turned up in the after. noon, and when the girl asked him for her jewellery he told her that it had been melted down. His mother was sick mud he could not obtain the money. The girl and party then returned to Hong kong, and the girl went-home and related what had happened to her father. He informed the Police, and investigations were made. One of the men visited the father with two pawn tickets and be was arrested, and as a result the others were also arrested. Inspector Kent further stated that when the girl went to Canton she left letter informing her father of bor movements. When, the woman's house was searched some of the jewellery was found A portion of the jewellery had been pawned -for $310.- -

The case was remanded, bail being fixed for the woman and two of the men at $500 sach and for the third man at $50.
