TO-NIGHT :

"THE FORTUNE HUNTER "

WEDNESDAY,

bis book 2914. In this Preface to the In Repertoire of the Latest London and New York Successes, second edition of his book, Viscount French replied to the criticisms on the book made by Mr. Asquith in his speech of June 3rd., and emphatically denied that he had ever made a statement on the lines attributed to him by Lord Kitchener, to the effect that his Army in, the Spring of 1913 had as much ammuni tion as his troops could use ip the next advance, a statement which formed the basis of Mr. Asquith's famous "shell". speech, in which he declared there was no shortage of shells for the Army in Franée-

Mr. Asquith has now addressed the lol. lowing letter to a correspondent:

Dear Sir,-- have only just returned from Italy, and, I am obliged to you for calling my attention to Lord French's Preface (published while I was abroad) to the second edition of his book "1914 " What you call the controversy *be Sween Lord French and myself "was not of my seaking. I preserved complete si ence, but when Lord French, apparently in the pursuit of a vendetta against the tame and memory of a great soldier and a former colleague of my owo-Lord Kitchener-who can no longer speak for himself, and to whom Lord French stood under strong personal obligations, pro ceeded, in my judgment. to, falsify his tory, I felt bound to intervañá.

Having now read his new Preface, 1 see no reason to withdraw or qualify a word in the speech which I made on the 3rd of June in this year. There are only two points in Lord French's attempted reply which call for any notice on my part...

1. Lord French absolves me from any further debate as to the occasion and result of Lord Kitchener's visit to Paris. by publishing at length Lord Kitchener's letter of September 1st, 1914, which, ai will be seen, conveyed the "instruction given by Lord Kitebener to Lord French on behalf of the Government,

Lord French cites two letters of warm appreciation of his services which I wrote to him on the 8th. September and the 6th November, 1914. It's enough to NY, that these letters were written after Lord French's original proposal, largely through the intervention of Lord Kitchener, had happily been discarded, and the subse quent operations had been conducted (as)

way and am most glad to acknowledge). by Lord French with much sagacity and Til

As these letters and a later one (also) cited by Lord French) dated May 13th., 1915, suficiently show, it was my prec tice, when head of the Government, to convey with all possible emphasis to the General in supreme cominand in the Field the expression of our confidence and en- couragement

If I had known, or suspected, "what Lord French now avows, that at the date of my litter of May, 1915, he was engag ed, behind the back and without the owledge of his official Chief, Lord Kitchener, and of myself, in a manœuvre to upset the Government at home, it is probable that my commmunication would have been couched in somewhat different.

taris.

II. In regard to the question. of the. supply of ammunition, Lord French expresses surprise" that I did not "recall " a conversation which I had with him at St. Omer in July, 1815, T recall the conversation perfectly, but did not refer to it in my speech last June t for three suficient reasons

(1) Because the object of my citation, of Lord Kitchener's, letter written in April 1815, was to justify the statement which I made in my speech later in that month a Newcastle-a matter to which at conversation held in the following July is obviously, irrelevant.

(2) Because I did, and do, believe that Lord Kitebener was incapable of invent- ing and palming off upon me, a delibe- rate falsehood.

(3) Because, if it becomes a question of conflict of memories, I thought, and still think, that Lord Kitchener's written record of a conversation in April, on the day on which it took place, is better evidence than Lord French's recollection of the same conversation three months afterwards, for which his only corrobor ration is an extract from a diary contain. ing (as he says) "no reference whatever to the subject..

I may add that I reported to Lord Kitchener what Lord French said to me, at St. Omer and that Lord Kitchener adhered entirely to his original version.

To have a bad memory is s misfortune, not a crime; but people who have bad memorice should not attempt to write their own or other people's—livet.— Yours faithfully.

H. H. ASQUITA. September 24th., 1919.

HUNGARY AND BÜMANIA,

Dr. Stephen Friedrich, Premier of Hungary, is reported. in a Vienna patch to have sent Kungavik dele sation to Bucharest. The report staten that, besides being empowered to negtit"," inta a separate peace with Rumania, the delegation may discuss the eventual anion of Hungary and Romania Ad- vices reaching the Pence Conference from Budapest indicate that the Government, beaded by De Friedrich will probably remain in office indefinitely, It is mid that Franz Heinrich's effort to establish coalition Cabinet has been abandoned, and there is, apparently, a general sup port of the Friedrich Government.
