The urgency of the housing problem at Braintree Essex, has led to an inter- esting development there which will be watched with interest by local authori- tics. The town has a dumber of enter prising industries in it, including the Crittal Manufacturing Company, who are engaged in turning out, on a large scale,

uch things as steel window frames, steel' doors and staircases. To meet the needs of their workpeople and others the Brain- tree Cooperative Homes (Limited) (n public utility society under the new Act) has been formed, and is building bouses on a new, cheap, and speedy plan.

They are made of concrete blocks. with continuous cavity walls, reinforced. concrete floors and roofs, and are fittel throughout with Crittal steel window

All the taircases and door frames. floors are covered with a jointless mate rial, so that it is not necessary for the tenants to provide linoleum or other Boor covering. The houses are draught dampfire, and verrain proof, and, as in all cement structures, will get stronger with age.

One hundred houses are being built, varying in size from those with living room, scullery and bath-room combined Land three bed rooms, to the largest type, which contain living-room, parlour, kit and bath chen, hall, four bed-rooms

TRIAL OF AMERICAN LIGHTNING SYSTEM.

An experiment in housebuilding on a system new to this country, but common the United States, is being carried out at Newton, near Swansea, by the well- known architect, Sir Charles Ruthen.

The houses, three in number, are being built on a site overlooking the Bristo Channel, selected on account of its ex- pused character. The first bouse was only comenced three weeks ago, and with in thirty days from the day apon which the frat sod was cut this house will be completed in every respect and fit for immediate occupation.

In an interview, Bir Charles Ruthen said that his system possessed all the good peints of the old-fashioned methods and son of the bad points.
