REGULARITY OF THE BOWELS

The First Line of Defence against Ill-Health.

Only about one man or woman in a hundred is perfectly healthy. The other 99 have some digestive trouble, and perhaps more than 50 per cent of these could trace their trouble to that prevalent evil-constipation. Its a simple thing of itself, but like many simple things, it may grow and become complicated. Constipation is the root of nine-tenths of the sickness of man, and a large proportion of the sickness of women. Nature often requires a little assistance, and if this assistance is given, at the first indication much distress and suffering may be averted. To maintain a healthy system the bowels should operate at least once every 24 hours. This is one of Nature's wise provisions which is too often ignored, and the result is untold suffering. Women and children are the greatest offenders, but Dr. Morse's Indian Root Fills are a why such should be the case is a problem to be solved. "remedy which, taken at the first indication, assist Nature to restore the system to health and strength, and avert the development of disease. Every ailment is the effort of Nature to get ride of some impurity in the system, and the object of medical treatment is to assist Nature in doing So, Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills do this surely and thoroughly. To overcome constipation rake one to four Pills regularly until the Bowels move daily, and are restored to healthy action-

QUEEN ELIZABETH'S RING, DISPERSAL OF EARL OF HOME'S

TREASURES..

Every day in these changeful times the naws.comes of new men succeeding to old acres, and coincidentally the stream of) old art treasures flows into the market. The demands of the Death Duties and the mandates of taxation are incalculable. Shortly the Earl of Hume's collections of did silver, furniture, and objects d'art, including Queen Elizabeth's mother-o' pearl ring (with enamelled portrait of herself and her mother, Anne Boleyn, in the bezel of it), will be sold at Christie's; the Scottish Castles of Bothwell änd Douglas, and of the Hirsel at Coldstream having been stripped of these noble heir- looms. The Home family Brst received their grant

of lands from William the Lion before 1214. The first lord was Am bassador to England in Henry VI's time, The

third led the van at Flodden, and afterwarda embraced the English in- terest.

The Bfth fought Bothwell, and protected James I, in his youth, coming with that monarch to England in 1609 as a Privy Councillor, and being craated An Earl in 1605.

GIFT TO THE EARL OF ESSEX,

Rich and rare, ihr the Home silver trophies will prove to be, popular interest will be centred in Queen Elizabeth's ring, which, it is highly probable, entered the family possession

through James 1.' benchman and protector, the first Earl This mother-of-pearl hoop is overlaid on the shoulders with band of gold set with rubies The gold bezel has six table dia- mandsforming the initial E., with a pearl and rubico. This bezel opens, and shows minutely-chased

HISTORIC TROPHIES.

of

Most of the Home silver trophies shone at the Great Exhibition at South Ken- sington in 1882, when old silver war worth only modest suma. When the Ashburnham silver was taken out of the callars of Coutts's bank, where it had sojourned for 30 years, a plain silver-gilt toilet service by Benjamin Pyne (1710) was found to be valued at £8,100 in the open market. The Home silver contains an early seventeenth century toilet

FIRST JAPANESE AMBASSADORS.

One wonders whether that frst Japan- ese mission which came to Europe ex pressly to visit the 1862 Exhibition made notes on the Home treasures. As Japan had double Government in 1882, this Erabassy was sent in duplicate, by the of the exhibition a chronicler of the day noted that among the glittering masses were the

SIR D..HAIG'S NEW TITLE.

Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig has decided to take the title of Earl Haig of Bemersyde.

Bemerayde is an estate with an old stronghold built in 1535 to secure the pence of the Border, near the Tweed and 34 miles east of Melrose, which has been held by the Haigs since the twelfth cen tary. Thomas the Rhymer (1990-1207), whose name in the folk lore of Scotland ie asociated with numerous fragments of yers of a prophatic character, and who. owned land at Erceldoune (now Earl. stoun), three miles away, wrote.--

Tyde what may betyde,

Haig shall be Laird of Bemorsyde.

J

And the family took as its motto the first three words of the rhyme. A Haig, of Bemersydo fought at Halidon Hill, an- ! other at Otterburn, and another at Flod- den, and still the Border prophecy holds

true.
