But it is to be noticed that there is in it less about the King and P thout ourselves, and even the natural scenery of our domicile, than be fore; and our taste and sense of congruity will have ultimately to decide whether this mixture of motive is calculated to make the same direct appeal a, the former single one. SCOTCH "ELOPEMENT.

A HAPPY ENDING.

There was a happy ending at Edin- burgh to the romance which, beginning with the elopement of an American off cer with a Gloucester lady, was quickly followed after their marriage by a sen tence to imprisonment, the Scottish law not having been complied with.

On June 17th the young officer, Ray wond L. Hiles, and "Majorie Evelyne Biles, Gloucestershire lady, were con victed in the Edinburgh Sheriff's Court for suborning two witnesses to make false statement before the Sheriff that they had been resident in Scotland for 21 days prior to the date of their irrega- lar marriage. Hiles was sentenced to a month's imprisonment.

Mr. Maclaren Henderson, solicitor, who represented files during his trial, presented memorial to the Secretary for Scotland, pointing out that the off- cer's offence was in a different category from the ordinary cases of this descrip- tion. Quarriving in Edinburgh from the south after eloping with thu lady, and, finding out that be could not be married at once, he committed the offence in order to save the lady's honour.

The Secretary gave permission for Hiles to be properly married, and the Ceremony took place in St. Andrew Parish Church, the Rev. George Christie officiating. Immediately after the cere mony the governor of the prison appear- ed, and to the great joy of bride and bridegroom, intimated that the Secretary for Scotland had consented to the release of Hilen.

GIRTON'S JUBILEE

"Girton College celebrated its jubilee on July 28th. Designed from its inception na college for giving a University odu cution to women, it was founded at Hitchin in 1860, and "noved to Cam- bridge in 1873. Girton girls have attend- ed University lectures and distinguished themselves in University examinations. On the educational side Girton, along" with Newähem and the women's college at Oxford, has carried on the work of "quipping women for the position in the State which they have claimed with success in the aphore of politics, and with a mature of success in the Civil Services, in the professions, and in industry. Girton has been an intellectual embodi- ment of the women's movement. It bas proved that women can acquire accurate knowledge and that they can stand the test of examinations as well as men. Now that they have so long experienced collegi. ate life, at "both Universities, and have shared the same courses of study and the same examinations, it is becoming ridicu lous that Oxford and Cambridge should refuse to women the full benefit of the! degr -Daily Chronicle.
