SMUGGLING OPIUM
At the Magistracy, yesterday, two Japanese were charged, on remand, with being in uningful possession of 160 lbs. * of opium, valued at over $2,000.
The two men were petty, officers on board the Tom Murn and were recent ly convicted by the Supreme Court and sentenced to three months hard labour each for offering a bribe of Rs. 200 to n Chinese Revenue Officer.
One of the inen pleaded guilty. Chief Revenue Officer Wildin said be was willing to withdraw the charge against the other prisoner.
Mr. Hutchison sentenced the man who had pleaded guilty to three months hard Inbour, and dismissed the case against the second man.
Mr. Hall replied that if the Magistrate intended to convict his client he would plead for leniency.
