He was about 2 years of age when he came to Bootland early in 1916, a tall, fine-book- ing man of military bearing, over six foet in height, with a fair moustache, and well dressed so far as appearances and manners went a perfect gentleman.

One of his telegrama, despatched to Amsterdam from Edinburgh, was-

"Send twenty-five thousand cigars, mixtares."

The true significance of this seemingly innocent message will be even later.

ARRIVAL IN INVERNESS.

On May 31st, 1916, Rocs arrived at Inverness, and put up at a comfortable It hotel situated in quiet street. was obviously not good policy to slay at the Station Hotel or any of the other big hotels, for these were busy with naval and military oficer. The hotel he bore tions be asked.

In accordance with regulations, Rous filled up the hotel registration form, in which he claimed Dutch nationality, was horn in 1982, and bad served in the Dutch

Navy in 1909-3

The landlady of the hotel, a shrewd Scotswoman, asked the newly-arrived visitor his name.

Reus, he replied. I beg your pardon," said the land Jady, not catching the name.

You know, was the reply. Rock (rose) without a thorn," and he laughed it off

In the course of the day Roos inquired of the landlady who were in the hotel, and kept very much to himself, speaking to no one. To the landlody he was most affable, nad showed a keen desire for information.

Next morning when doing up his bed. room the landlady and her servant com- mented upon the effeminate appearance of his dressing-table. The room looked more like a lady's than a gentleman's.

On the dissing table lay two perfume bottles, a perfume spray, and a powder box. What they actually contained will be divulged later.

Upon the vast panorama of fighting ships the Master Spy must have feasted his eves.

That night when he got back to his hotel in Inverness he informed his land- lady that he was going to Tain carly in the morning in order to try and do busi ness, and would not be back in Inverness until late in the evening.

The morning saw him on the North train, but what was the landlady's sur

prise that afternoon to see him back again in the hotel, hours before he was expected.

On her expressing surprise at his early return, the spy suid:-

It's only a one horse show; there way no business, go 1 just came back!

But he bad scen what be bad gone to see the oil-tanks at Invergordon which Are situated beside the railway, and probably some of his agents, who at that

DRAMATIC SCENE AT COURT-MARTIAL On 18th and 17th July Roos and Yaussen were tried by Court-Martial, over which Lord Chelmsford presided.

A LOST TELEGRAM.

The following morning he inquired of the landlady if there was a public motor car service to Cromarty. He was told that at that time none was running, but that if he went to a certain garage near by he would be able to hire a car.

At this proposal Roos shook his head. He really could not afford to hire a car, and he was so anxieng to see the country round about. He had heard that the scenery was so finel
