Loss OF THE "AUDACIOUS.” Although the einking of H.M.8. Audacious on October 27th, 1014, after striking a mine was widely known soon after the event, publication of the fact was not permitted, and the low was only admitted by the Admiralty shortly afte the armistice had been signed. It is now possible to give full details of the dis aster:
The Second Battle Squadron had been ordered to carry out target practice some fifteen miles off Lough Swilly. Practice was expected to commence at about nine o'clock in the morning. At 8.46 de signal was made for the ships forming the bring line of which he dituendia was one-
to turn to the firing cours, and at the same time" Exercise action was Bound. ed. After an interval of len minutes the captain of the Audiernas, noticed a dull noise aft This at frat he thought was caused by one of the guns having been fired but as no smoke was issuing from them he considered it must have been
a gun on one of the other ships. The Yeoman of signals reported almost inune diately that "be feared they had been struck by a torpedo, and this was borne out by the fact that the ship did not right, as she should have after the port
heli was taken off her.
*
Orders were given for the water tight doors to be closed, and for the starboard wing compartment to be flooded to konp the whip upright, and an officer was sent to see what Bulkheads required shoring
With
view to keeping the ship steady she was hauled out of line and into wind and aes. Shortly afterwards the port engine stopped, the port wing engine room being flooded.
The port bulkhend of the centre engine room ap peared to be standing all right, but as water was entering the middle engine
was shaped for Lough Bwilly with all speed possible on the star- The chip was sheering badly with a heavy sea on the quarter, but nevertheless was making nine knots. Some twenty minutes later all electrio communication ceased.

IN THE ENGINE ROOM,
The engine room was in darkness save for the dim glinumer of the hund oil lamps, In spite of the bft. or aft of water that flooded the room, and oil covering
the platform, the officers and men were working with the greatest wolnem and energy endeavouring to cope with the water, and with fine determination the or in charge declared that he hoped
to be able to steam for another two hours.
Meanwhile the commander was working diligently making rafts and preparing the boats. Examination showed that n considerable sortion of the after-part of the ship was full of water but it was not

pleven M. over two hours after she had been mined, the Audacinus censed to steam, and as she had been steadily getting lower in the water the launch sailing pinnace, and three cutters were got out. The performance of this task reflects the utmost credit as the ship waa labouring very heavily and the sea washing over the not shelf. Such was the fore of the waves that two boats stow ed on the quarterdeck-the galley and the whaler--were washed uverboard. The starboard after-guy of the main derrick carried away, and the derrick Look charge, the great boom was crashing about until it was lassoed and lashed to the strut of the mast.
It was now about noon, and standing by were his Majesty's ship Liverpool, several destroyers, and the Olympic, which had arrived in respone to urgent calls for help. All these ships sent boate, and as none of the engines of the Audu Crom would steam, the cugine com ratings, day men, and most of the Marines were sent off, leaving about 250 seamen on board. The lympic was ask cd take the Audacious in tow, and a line was taken to her by his Majesty's ship Fury. The way the Olympic was handled in the henry sea which was run. ning was described as a moat excellent piece of seamanship, and received high commendation from the Commander-in- Chief. The Audacius, however, was by now quite unmanageable. and, sheering off into the wind, parted the tow.

His Majesty's ship Liverpool was then asked to tow, it being thought that, as she was lighter than the Olympe, sho would give better to the great weight of The Audacious. Pary took a line to her. but it fouled one of the Liverpool's and was cut. The cottier Thurn- hill was then asked to try, and the Fury took a line to her, but the tow parted It was as soon as it was taughtened. and the ship was more and more uneDay about five o'clock and getting dark, in the water. The quarter-deck was awash, and the mushroom ventilators had been that tons of water must have been going either torn away or bent right over, so below. Stops could not be taken to pro vent this as in such seas no one could live on the quarter-deck. It was, thore- fore, considered advisable to remove all enve fifty men. Volunteers were asked, and from the large number who came forward Bity were selected. Later, the ship became so sluggish and rolled so deeply that it was decided to abandon ber till morning and the retaining offi- cers and men were disembarked.
A TERRIBLE EXPLOSION.
At nine p, there was a terrible ex plosion, and the ship turned bottom up and sank stern first, It is dificult to account for this explosion but possibly the contents of one of the magazines and shell-rooms alid bodily through the cro bunkers inte one of the boiler rooms, which must have been very hot, ne no fans had been running for hours.
An officer who saw the Audacious go down gives the following secount:
