ANGIO-AMERICAN CO-OPERATION.
The annual general meeting of the British Chamber of Commeros, Shanghai, was held on March 20th, at the Palace Hotel
After the notice convening the meeting, The Chairman said, inter alia: ~What was the Chamber founded primarily to del Surely it was primarily to found a Society which should solidify British interests in the Far East. Great and vigorous as these intarosts were when war started they suffered from one very con- siderable weakness, They wore too in- dividualistic. The same was true of the intorests of Great Britain and the Em-
pire as a whole. There was too little co-operation Neither politically nor economically wore We properly knit together, as the first few months of the war unquestionably showed. In Great Floor of Britain and the Empire as a whole that is all changed now and out here in China things have changed too. British inter- osts have been solidified in a way both new and striking-and to a very great extent it has been this Chamber which bas done this. Let me particularize.

united front and to prove to all that TROUBLE OVER THE SERVICE OF Britons in China are determined to have, nothing whatever to do with the Hun, at least until such time as a resumption of business dealings with him is stated by H.M. Even then the policy of this Chamber will, I trist, be to restrict relations with Gor mans to the narrowest possible limits. our day there oun be no question of friendship with Germans, and where friendship is impossible rautual respect and mutual confidence, the very basis of trade as British understand it, are im possible.

Higas are not wanting that the younger generation of Chinese business men, who have absorbed Western ideas either in the many schools provided for them in China itself, or by actual study in England or America, are at last beginning to realize that an expensive education is something to be made use of.
Foreigners in China have for long se that it was impossible for this country
to do herself justice so long as those in authority persisted in clinging to their old conservative business methods of
metals, which should have been possible "layer fuire." Trade in methods and years ago, still hangs fire because of the absurd and unworkable provisions which hedge around any development of this nature.

Mr. H. P. Wilkinson appeared ou behalf of the plaintiffs, the Shanghai Sharebrokern Association, in an action brought by them against Mr. J. A. Hayes. The defendant was represented by Mr. Duncan McNeill.
It appears that the writ was served upon the plaintiff at the Shanghai Club and he refused to accept sorvico, telling
the officer of the Court to serve it upon his Counsel. Mr. MoNeill did not receive
a copy of the writ.
Mr. Wilkinson: Service can be either on the defendant or his Connect.
His Lordship: Yes, on the defendant if you like, but it is usually a matter of courtesy between practitioners.
Mr. MoNeill: I think your Lordship will agree with me that the Court by

The idea was sympathetically received, and while it has not yet taken practical forin, it is, 1 trust, certainly not going to be allowed to die. Of the value of such a Conference there can be no two opinions. Morally and
and practically it would do wash to weld British interests in China toge ther. Today is the day of big organiza tions, big ideas and big schemes. An annual conference of all British Chambers in China would, in my opinion, be a fine thing and we have already travelled to far, towards its realization, bra podo
and desirable.
In the main, this question of co-opera- tivo assistance must be left to the in- dividual heads of business concerns in the East, who will have to decide for them selves in what way they can best help along the movement which must be for the ultimate benefit of both.
