Waitneck was charged with having absented himself without leave from the master or officer in charge of
the ship.
Mr B. Duffield, the second mate, said that while he was trying to stop one of the erew going ashore at Yokohama, on February 17th, Larsen rushed along the deck, swinging his arme about, and aimet least half-a-dozen blows at him, shouting out, at the same time, that it cost only five shillings to strike an officer,

Commander Beckwith (to the first de- fondant): Did you really think that it would only cost you five shillings to strike an officer? Can you show me the regula bious which support such a statement? You must have been at some curious ports-Larson denied that he made such
a statement...
Mr. E. Evaus, Chief Officer, said he remembered that there was trouble en board the Oakfell at Yokohama.

THE CHARTERED BANK. THE INCREASE OF CAPITAL An extraordinary general meeting of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia) and China was held at 38, Bishopsgate, | London, E.C., on December 18th, with Sir Montagu C. Turner in the chair, to con- sider the proposal made by the Board of Directors to increase the capital of the Bank by the issue of new shares.
The re
The Chairanan said: The capital of this Bank in 1860 was £644,000, the In 1804 reserve then stood at £5,000. the capital was raised to £500,000 and the reserve stood at £105,000. serve subsequently more or less disap. peared; but in later years it was again built up steadily, and by the year 1997, when the capital of the Bank was raised from £800,000 to £1,200,000, we then had a reserve of £1,500,000. Since that date the reserve hue steadily increased, and to-day we bave a reserve of £2,000,000 sterling, as compared with the capital of the Bank of £1,300,000.

The directors are of opinion that the time has now arrived when, to meet the expansion of trade and increased Snan- cial demands both bore and in the East, we can safely recommend an in capital. We have decided to issue the new shares at a figure which will be a substantial gift practically to the exist ing shareholders, looking at the price market issued as compared with the price of to-day In 1907 the new shares were issued at £40--that is, £20 premium, as we propose to day-and I think our shares then stood hetween 0 and 60, certainly not above 60, and to day, the market quotation is between 89 and 90, so that what we propose to-day is really a substantial gift to our shareholders, and we are exceedingly glad to do go, because the shareholders have been wiso and have not objected past generations to the annual addition to our reserve, and in that way have strengthened the their own bosition of the holding of shares in the market.
Now we have purposely made the in- stalments on the new shares, payable at fairly long intervals, and in such amounts as would suit the convenience To those of the smaller aliareholders. who are willing to make one payment we are prepared to allow a discount of 5 Thon interest on instalments per cont. will be free of income tax, and fractional Wil certificates for one-third share will be issued, so that the holders of shares on. the register on the 8th proximo may take For full advantage of the allotment. example, a holder of four old shares will be allocated two new shares and two frac tional certificates of one-third each. A holder of eight shares will become entitled fractional cer- to five new shares and a
tificate for one-third, and so on. Ap- plication is being made to the Stock Ex change Committee for permission to deal in the fractional certificates.
Commander Beckwith read an entry in the log-book that Larsen had been inso lent to the second officer when spoken to about having steered a wrong course.
Larson denied this, and Commander Beckwith pointed out that such an entry would not have been made in the log without due regard to its importance.
Larson said he had been at sea for 30 years and theroforo knew somethingket, we feel confident that as one of the about steering. He had not made a mis take, but might have heard the socond mate give him the coarse wrongly. this instance, he did not threaten the second mate

Waitneck strongly denied this, and said had not threatened the second officer on that er any other occasion.
With our increased capital, our splen- did resorves, and our credit in the mar eastern exchange banks we shall be in a position to meet our share of tho finan- gial, needs consequent on the expansion of trade, both here and in the east, an expansion we can reasonably anticipate, provided peace and good Government both at home and abroad prevail in the coming years,
As the moraent, trade is suffering to some extent from the effects of a fall in prices consequent on the abrupt termina Commander Beckwith convicted both tion of hostilities. Gentlemen, I now beg to move the re- solution:That the capital of the Bank be increased to 100,000 shares by the issue of 40,000 new shares of £20 each, and that dich shares be offered to the oxisting shareholders in the proportion of two new shares for every three abates already held, at premium of £20 por share, payment to be made in the follow- ing instalments: £10 on or before 1st March, 1919; £10 on or before 2nd June, The following jury was empanelled:-1010; £10 on or before lat September, Messrs.
