KING THE KAISER... AMINATION OF THE OASE

FOR THE ACCUSED.

[BY ARNOLD BENNETT.}

Every vocation has its drawbacks. The monarchical vocation has dazzling ad vantages, and its drawbacks are commen- surate. The life of a German monarch cannot, in the nature of things, be all rid ings on a white charger, and changings of brilliant uniforms, and mouthings of grandiose rapi. The life of imperial militaristic strutter must have also its more serious moments, and the ex-Kaiser has now arrived at the most serious mo ment of all. Just as, if Germany had won, the earth would not have held his infinite conocit, so now the earth is to small to hide him away. He carnut escape, unless he commits suicide-and he will not commit suicide.

He is caught.

Bat let us give an imprsial car to the arguments against any proceedings to punish the ox Kaiser.

Such

arguments exist, and, happily for our reputation found the publish them. The principal for moral courage, individuals are to be arguments, so far as I can discover, bre three in nuraber.

DEATH OF CAPT ROBINSON, A SIX-HOUR DAY FOR ALL WISEMAN, LTD. THEATRE

V.C.

VICTIM OF GERMAN PRISONS.

Captain William Leefe Robinson, V.C., the first airman to bring down a raiding Zeppelin in England, died at his home at Stanmore on December 31st. Influenza, following the privationis he endured as a prisoner-of-war in Germany, put a tragic end to the career of the young air man at the moment of his restoration to home and friends and on the eve of his marriage.

It was only on December 14th that Captain Robinson reached England from captivity He bore the traces then of the close confinement to which, with other British officers, he had been subjected by the enemy. His three or four attempts to escape were unsuccessful, and finally the Germans placed him in a small cell in solitude.

This being so, the instinct for revenge must weaken, and the abstract adoration of the German monarchical principle (in volving as it does the militarist prin- cipio) must wither gradually away. fact is that the mass of the German race actly revered and flattered the Kaiser exactly as long as the mass of the Russian race revered and flattered the Tsar-namely, until he ceased to be glorious. The Ger man race is realistic in this, that it has no use for fost causes. And the German race knows the true meaning of that sub lime institution, the German military machine.
