KOWLOON BRITISH SCHOOL ANNUAL DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES.
The annual distribution of prizes to the students of the Kowloon British- School took place, yesterday morning, in the school-ball, which was gaily beflagged for the orcusion. The ceremony was per formed by Mr. E. A. Irving, Director of Education, who presided over a-large gathering of parents and friends of the pupils.
After the distribution of the awarde the Chairman gave a brief address. He anid he was particularly interested in the fact that the health of the school had improved so much. He was talking about, the maller the other day to Dr. Salaller whee Was very enthusiastic Since the Government inspections, the health of the school, especially in regard to Berth, had improved in a remarkable way. The reason for that was that the periodical medical inspections were Pavement way of drawing the attention of parents to some of the defects in their

It
posed that a good many of the children who had refined in Hongkong during the war would probably go Home. There was likely to be a great exodus this year. One great difficulty in dealing, with the school was that its numbers were small, especially in the higher classes, One could nak the Government to erdbark. upas more expenditure if the clubes were larger. If the school maintained is present nombora, he was sure that the. Government wodd want to do everything it could to support it. During the war, it had not been easy to get ihouy for shouts and there was also a difficulty about staffs; but he hoped that things would be very much easier now. He felt that it was for parents to express themselves with regard to anything which they thought would enlarge the school's activities, etc., and they could be quite Ed certain that, if they inform Mr. wards, they would receive a sympathetic hearing, and when Mr. Edwards report ed to him bo would represent thatters to the Government as far as he was able. He felt that the British children in the Colony were necessarily handicapped; i would be better if they could be sent Home, but as this could not be done,

The Headmaster's report stated that the School was opened 172 times during the year. The maximum enrolment was 87 in November as compared with 71 last year; and the minimum onrolment, 87 in July as against 66 last year. average daily daily attendance was 66.)
The attendance was seriously affected by on outbreak of measles in January, which eventually necessitated the School being closed for three weeks. When the School re-opened on March 11th, cerebro- spinal meningitis had made its ap. pearance in the Colony and a large num ber of children were kept away in con- sequence. Two cases of diphtherin occur. red in December. The Government Medi- cal Officer, Dr. Smalley, carried out three inspections during the year. There were still 4 fer cases of defective teeth,
but a very parked improvement is notice able in this respect.
No alterations have been made in the School Buildings, although, with the increased number of pupils in attendance, the school was in need of at least two more large class-rooms.
