-NURSE DIES FROM SHOCK. An extraordinary, story of a mêlée si Liverpool military hospital was related 4t an inquest on Nuria McShane, aged 10 a native of co. Armagh.

Me: William Henry Taylor, officer, in charge of Belmond road Military Ausi- liary Hospital, said it "contained" black and white patients. the former being British West Indians. The coloured man had been kicking over the traces" somewhat, with regard to over-staying the time allowed them out of hospital. Iber persistently came in late. As a conso- quence of this the military polico guard. was redoubled and the names and num Ebers of late-comers were taken. Shortly before eight o'clock on Wednesday last a West Indian sergeant named Demetrius made his way towards the gate guarded by military police and attempted to leave the hospital. He was stopped, but im mediately drew, a razor sad, slashed wildly with it. He was disarmed and placed in a cell Ten late-comers, "all. West Indians, then appeared after their aames had been taken. Two of the number refused to go to their wards, and being joined by lour or five other colour- ed men, also" late comers, became very abusive. An attempt was made to take them to the cells, and fifty other West Indian joined in the affair, taking pos session of the police lodge. Some 400 wounded British Tommies who were witnessing a concert in the hall in the hospital came to the rescue of the mili tary police. A mêlée ensued, in which crutches and sticks were freely used and in which pots and pana were flying about.. The Civil police were called in, and later the assistant provost marshal with ́a number of military police arrived and. order was restored."

Unfortunately Nurse McShane, while helping another girl named White, a laundress who had fainted, was caught n the rush of men. She was rushed off. her feet against a door that became an- hinged, and was knocked down... She sustained no severe injuries, but was found to be safering from severe shock. Paedonia dereloped and abe died four days later. No other nurse was injured and no one had sustained serious in.. tjuries.
