HONGKONG'S STORM SIGNALS

A NEW CODE.

New local and non-local atorm signals codes will be introduced at Hongkong on July ist, in place of

the oid Local Code and tha Chins Const

Code.

The principal change in the Local Code

is that the new signals will show the direction from which the gale is expected, whereas the old signals showed the posi- tion of the typhoon. The latter will be indicated, as heretofore, by the non-local signals. The new Local Code is given below:

DAY BIGNALE.

Meaning.

Signal. Symbol.

1.-Rod cons.-A typhoon exists which may possibly cause a gale at Hongkong with. in. 24 hours.

North (N.W. to N.E.).

2.-Black one-Gale expected from the

3-Black cone

inverted.-Gale expected from the

South (B.E. to B. W.). 4.-Black drum.-Gale expected from the

East (N.E. to S.E.).

5.-Black ball-Gole expected from the

West (N.W. to B.W.). 6.-Double cope.-Gule axpected to in-

1.-Black cross-Wind of typhoon fores expected (any direo- tion).

Bignal No. 7 will be accompanied by three explosive bombs, fired at intervala of 10 seconds at the Water Police Station"

SUPPIMMENTARY WARNING,

When loosl signals are displayed in the Harbour Cone will be exhibited at the following stations:--Uap Rook, Waglan, Stanley, Aberdeen, Ban Ki Wan, Sai Kung, Sha Tau Kok and Tal Po, to notify the fact to nativa craft and passing ocean vessels

The object of the code is to give at Isnać 24 hours warning of a gale (Fores 8 by Beaufort Scale, or 40-46, n.p... mosa velocity by Dines Anemometer) and slan warnings of expected changes in the direction and force of the wind. Owing, however, to the uncertain movementa of typhoons and to insufficient telegraphic obeervations, it will occasionally happen that signals 2 to 5 may be displayed without a gale occurring at Hongkong, or oven Gap Bock, but the reverse is not likely to happen, except in the case of typhoons forming in the vicinity and travelling rapidly towards Hongkang, or of & located typhoon increasing its rate of progression abnormally.
