SHANGHAI TRADE REPORT. STEADILY GROWING PROSPERITY

OF THE PORT.

Mr. F. 8. Unwin, the Commissioner of Customs in his report on the trade of Shanghai in 1916, says:

At first glance the Shanghai statistics for the year 1910 would appear to indicato considerable expansion of trade under all headings, produce shipped abroad particularly showing a gain of over 20 3 million taels in value as compared with the figures, for 1015 and far surpassing those of any previous year. This advance in the total value of the port's exports represents, of course, a solid and satis factory gain, although it will be found to be due to the greatly enhanced values of commodities rather than to any increase in the volume of the trade done in them. Similarly, the increased value of imports from foreign and Chinese ports, which J. Stalker . Yew Man Tsar shows an advance on last year's figures

Once more we find the valuo of produce shipped abroad well in excess of that of imported goods, in spite of the abnormally high exchange rates Bfor silver that prevailed during the great- er purt of 1916, rising, with fluctuations, from 38 21 in May to 35. 6ld; for the tael in December.
