HONGKONG CRIMINAL

SESSIONS.

ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE.

One of two Chinese who were charged with robbery with violence in the New Territory was discharged, but the other. was found

guilty

This was an echo of a robbery with violence case which was heard at the previous Criminal Sessions.

Addressing the prisoner who was found guilty, the Chief Justice said that a number of conspirators in the crime were sentenced at the last Cringnal Seasiena. He would not sentence the present pri soner to such a long term of imprison- ment as he had inflicted on the other mon because he (the Chief Justice) was going to impose corporal punishment which would make the prisoner feel emo of the misery he had inflicted on others. He would be sentenced to eight years hard labour, and receive fourteen strokes. with the "ent."//

When a Chinese who had seventeen. previous convictions was charged with the theft of clothing at Yuumati, the Chief Justice reminded him that he lad quite recently been before the Court for a similar offence.

To this the prisoner replied that he had been in gaol so many times that he was at a loss to know what to do fur a living except steal.

He was sentenced to twelve months' faced labour.

FALSE MONEY

Thu case was not concluded in which a Chinese was charged with having in his possession 202 counterfeit Hongkong ten cent pieces, and nine counterfeit Hong- kong silver dollars, with intent to utter the same.

The man was apprehended by a bucking in Third Street, and a basket which he was carrying was found to contain the

bad coin, it being mixed up with good

money.

The man's excuse was that he was not aware that the money was bad, and that it had been given him to take to Canton to be melted down.
