“WHAT DID YOU DO, DADDY?" (UTLER PALMER & CO'S

ABAN OF FORTY.]

What did you do in the Great War, Haddy? aaid a little boy in the your 1937. He had a large forehead and wore apectacles.

I have been expecting that question for long time, my bay," replied the father. We were warned in those days that our children would ask it."

I have not and this inquiry bill now," said the little boy, because hitherto I have found the larger aspects of the great struggle só enthralling that it has not occurred to me to be curious as to what part so very ordinary an indivi

dual as yourself may have borne thereia; for 1 gather from my reading that every Englishman was expected to do his sharo.

That is so, my boy," the father agreed." And I am thankful to be able to tell you that I did mine. But at the same time I would have juu understand that I do not intend to submit to a cross- cx.&ination.

Nor I to submit you to one," replied the little boy, looking at his watch. "I have but a few minutes in which to. satiety, while I think of it, what is little more than an idle curiosity before. leav ing here to attend a lecture on The Effects of Concentrated Thought on In aniante Matter," Therefore in order that I may, achieve my object with brevity I will repeat my question: What did you do in the Grat Wai,

In the Great War, my boy," the answered, served my country. by acting as

mumber of a tribunal.” A tribunal take it," said the little boy, was a sort of committee, focally appointed, to' decide whether certain young men were more likely to be resefni to the State in military of civil daprej. tics."

That is quite correct, my boy," unid the father. And

"I fear 1 can avoid a slight digres sion, after all," the little boy interrupted. But how was it that you yourself were not a soldier!"

"Because I was roo valuable ne a whole sale seedsman," the father explained. even if I had not been over the mili tary age.

I was forty-two when the war ingan.

Could you not have understated your age?" the little boy asked,

To have done thai, my hoy." observed

THE NEW VISOR HELMET.

IN USE BY BRITISH TROOPS. One of the most interesting among the exhibits of women's work in the rooms of the Colonial Instituts recently was the now chain visor helmet, which is now Being supplied the British troops, This is an adaptation of the familiar stevi anti shrapnel helmet, which has been instrumental in saving so many hundreds of lives and thousands of headl wounds. Round the forepart of the rim of this helmet runs a alender rod. to which is defied a strip of steel chain mail, about 3in, deep. This slides on the rod as ausily as a curtain, and it can be drawn, like a well, fairly close by an ingenious contrivance and fastening. The eyes of the wearer are thus protected against any flying fragment of sheb, or what is almost equally dangerous-any stone or piece of sarth thrown up by the explosion of a shell.

It is not duimed, of course, that this visor of mail will turn a direct hit which would infict a moral wound. Against that no protection is possible. But the great majority of cases of blindness ary due to srall flying particles of shell of stone which, if they had struck the check or forehead, would not have enused a serious wound. But when the eye is hit at all penetration is certain; and that usually means blindness,

It is believed by the inventor, Captain R. B. Cruise, RA.M.C. (T), the well- known opthalmic surgeon that his visor will ean a very large percentage of these cates of preventable hindness. The steel mail, of course, buscures the vision to à grtain extent but not to such a degie that the soldier is unable to use his rife But if he wishes grooter clear- ness of sight, half the mail can be looped back and one eye will still be securely protected,
