In South China, especially in the inland parts, there are great stretches of hill which serve little or no purpose except that of growing grass which the peasants out for cooking their food Now that China is getting agricultur and other bureaux, it is, beginning to apply their knowledge to what may be done with these hills. If you ask Chinamen why their bills are go bare The will invariably reply that it lorder to prevent wild beasta from her coming plentiful. Yet this notion, i getting exploded, for now a serious at- tempt is being made to get these barn wastes covered with trees. One of our large districts called Moi-yen Of old it always was, and it still is, a centre of education. On the recent Ch'ung-ming, holidny a novel pasttime was given to the school boys The bigger boys were divided off into companies of ten, cach under the control of a master. They were provided with young tree-plants, and found their way to the hills, where they were taught how to plant them. Thus 4 beginning is being made in afforestation and in changing these wide wastes into profitable areas,

What may be called a Liberty of Con Science Society is being formed in the Capital Its chief sim, as far as I can make out, is to prevent, if possible, the State from recognising any one form of religion. Men and women are invited to become members of this Society, One's signature is all that is needed to be con- stituted a member. Names of members will be affixed to all petitions presented to the Government with a view to main tain the right of Liberty of Conscience intact It in somewhat strange that people should be so much concerned about a matter of this kind in Republic- the right on which a Repablit largely Mr. C. A MATRIMONIAL DISPUTE.
Recently a middleman found a wife for a client for the sum of one hundred and eighty dollars. The young woman discovered that the man was addicted to opium, tnoking and refused out and out to marry him. She escaped, and, when found, eltted to return The interest ing question is what will the law courts of China do in this case, for it in aub mitted to them for decision. Chinese maintain that Chinese law has fio pro- vision for women's right. The nice thing to do would be for the father to over- ride scruples and receive his daughter back into his home and return the $180. This would satisfy the opiumist and his daughter also
