We do not know the when a man who had specialised all his attitude of the responsible authorities of life in educational work would be given the local University towards Europeans the direction of such work in this Colony-whether it be one of encouragement or For Hongkong has always faithfully fol. otherwise; but we think that they should lowed the old British Cabinet system of certainly be sympathetic to any such pro- soireting as administrative heads of pussis, because it was distinctly under Government Departments individuals stood from the beginning, that all races who have had experience in all sorts of and creeds would be welcomed. of our fellow- proving the education countrymen at Home that we cannot lose sight of the fact that the children of British parents who are trained out hers will also need to be better equipped for the battle of life. At the recent Con- ference of Headmasters in England, Mr. HIDHENS, the administrator of a very large works, gave some very sound advice upon this subject. Towards the close of his address be said: "A want of educa tion, or, worse stall, a misguided educa tion, lies at the root of our troubles." We want to do what we can, in the Far East, to improve the education of the Chinese, the British, the Portuguese and the Indians. No race is more alive tu the importance of education than the Scotch. There are many of them on the China Coast, and we are sure that they will do anything possible to askist in so good a cause. There have been praise. reason we worthy efforts by the Chinese to found

Not long ago, the local Chinese mer chants drew attention to the unsatisfne tory state of affairs in connection with the teaching of English in the local schools. We fear that the complaint will be more merited in future, owing to the anavoidable depletion of the teaching staff of these establishments as a result of the war. Patriotic schoolmasters of the Colony have volunteered for the front and been accepted, and their places cannot be filled. It will be remembered, of course, that the schools and colleges of Great Britain have suffered far worse than the educational establishments of this Colony from this cause, so that, after all, the Chinese boy in Hongkong is relatively better off in regard to educa- tional facilities during this time of areas than is the British schoolboy at home. When the war is over we hope that great improvement there will be a in the teaching of English in the

For that strongly urge upon the Government the need of establishing a system of training Chinese teachers who would then be qualified to impart the rudiments of English. In Britain there are large departments of the modern Universities in which hundreds of young men and women are trained for teaching. Their commencing salary and the possibi lity of pronfotion depend upon the quali: fications which they obtain during this period, Young Chinese should be encour- aged to seek such a training for teaching English not only in the schools of the
