The recently published trade returns 1.30

for January have been received in certain 100:00 150.00 quarters with, a satisfaction which t extraordinarily misplaced (says the Dail Telegraphy. It is not magnificent, some people are saying, that at one of the most critical moments of the biggest war in our history our Imports for a single month should reach a total of £90,585,000 The answer is that it certainly is magni- ficent, but that it is not war, or at least. that it is not the way to victory, bat to financial trouble and difficulty. This record figure of ninety millions ent half is not a thing to be proud of but a feet to be deprecated. It is an increase of £10,000,000, or nearly 1 per cent, over the figure of January, 1916, and though our exports for the month rose by £10,100,000, the adverse halance against us renched the enormous total of £13 £71,000, as against £29,300,000 a year ago, and that is a figure which was only exceeded last March and lust November. Of course, the actual increase is not in quantities but in prices but that is no consolation to the authorities at the Treasury, when they see the adverso 100.00 balance running up into hundreds of millions, and this quite irrespective of the money that has to be found for the 190,20 enormous Government purchases in rem spect of munitions not a penny of 25.00 which figures in the official trade returns, 170.20 and the amount of which is very pro- perly kept a glose secret. There is no 30.00. Peoret, however, as to its magnitude, and 25.00 we tay, stress on it here in order to emphasize the imperative need which lies upon the nation to restrict its imports
