THE FMS GOVERNMENT'S. ATTITUDE DEFINED

The General Secretary of the F.M.S Chamber of Commerce has received a letter from the Under Secretary, F.M.S., in reply to the resolution recently passed at a joint meeting of the PAM, the FMS. Chamber of Mines and the F.MS, Chamber of Commerce. The re- solution in question was as follows:-

That this joint meeting of represents- tires of the Planters Association of Malaya, the IMS Chamber of Mines and the FM.S. Chamber of Commeren considers that the pretent scheme of ch taining then from the FM.S. for active service by inviting volunteers is not a satisfactory one, and if the Government does now or may in the future desire to send mon from the FMS on active service oaside Malaya, then thọ Govern- ment of the F.M.S; be asked to register all adult male European British sub jects in the Federation and have theui examined for fitness for military service, with a view to mobilising them as and. when required for qevice with the im perial forces. In the opinion of the Government the scheme as regards Advisory Committees set forth in the notice issued by the Governacht is perfectly clear. It gives. the employer and the employed the option of seeking the advice of the committee and it allows of men of mili- tary age, who cannot in the opinion of the committee be spared, obtaining, certi- ficates which, no doubt, they will be glad to have and to show in after life. It is trusted that all employers will encourage those who are employed by them who are of military age to be medically examinet and go before the Advisory Committer but if it is found that employers are putting pressure on employers not to do so or that men of military age aro objecting for other reasons to be examined and take advice, then the Government will be ready to consider whether the wishes of the joint mocting of representatives of the Planters Association of Malaya, the Federated Malay States Chamber of Mines and the Federated Malay States Chamber of Commarce cannot be met and an Enact-
