At the Men's Club Social to be held statistics can be misleading, there are at the Seamen's Institute to-morrow surely few who will refuse to recognise (Wednesday) an attractive programme of the cogency of the argument underlying the figures quoted by Dr. WOODMAN at the last mecting of the Sanitary Board. "Only GG of the Cases that occurred last year wetò vaccinated, and of these very few had been vaccinated since be free.

Sixteen died, v... 24 per childhood. cent. Of the remaining 640 unvaccinated cases, 620 had died up to the end of Inst year, and there were still many under treatment. This is equal to 81 per cent. of deaths, which means that if the unvaccinated people had been vaccin- ated probably only about 130 would have died, a saving of nearly 400 lives. The proportion of vaccinated, cases to un- vaccinated, is about the same this year us lant, which shows that the recently vaccinated people are not contracting small-pox, and also suggests that many more people would have caught small pox if there had been no vaccination doce, and also that a lot more people require vaccinating. The average age of the vaccinated people who caught small pox was 26; of the unvaccinated it

was under 5 years."

These figures simply corroborate the results recorded elsewhere. When vocal- nation was first introduced as a preveu tive of small-pox, Dr. JENNER declared that it gave immunity for life. The Medical profession were obliged to modify this view in the light of later experience, but whether vaccination gives immunity for lite, for seven years, for five years, or even for one year only, is a matter of relatively small import ance. At least it can be affirmed that
