SCOTTISH TRAITS. (3 The following is a fuller report of the speech of Mr. A. G. Gordon, chairmen of the Burns dinner, then we were ablo' in the time at our disposal to give in yesterday's issue :--.

Gentlemen, I have the pleasure of speaking to you about sertain traita of character of the Scottish people. One of the first trait is their humour. We are, I hope, a Christian people, but I am certain, that our Christianity has on tested a good many times by that often repeated proverb of Sidney Smith's that it takes a surgical operation to get a joke into & Scotchman's dead.

A recent writer, whom I cannot iden- tify, and whose name I do not want to know, denies that there is anything in our humour that is light in touch, de- licate and graceful. He asserte instead that there is much that is austere and Fawkward.. tiresome, und unpleasant. Now each nation takes its own humar in its own way--some joyously, some seriously, but none mory conscientiously then the Scotch.

If you want the most beautiful flover of humour, wit, you must go to France for it. There is no wit so subtle, so fuished, so complete as the French wit, especially the wit of the Parisian. There you will find what might be term

ed the aristocracy: of wit.

Wist I nman by wij is this. Two mer wero riding together one day through Paria. One was excodingly bright and clever, while the other was correspond ingly dull. As is usually the case, the latter monopolized the conversation. The talk of the duliard bad become almost unendurable, when as companion saw a man on the street far ahead yawning.

Look,

We are over- be exclaimed, board!

That story divides the sheep from the Koate, was telling it once to a Scotch ** How could they ady, who remarked: Janve been overheard is that distance?

The Scot is endowed with an excess of caution unnecessary reserve. Recently a train in Scotland came to a junction, when the porter shouted inside each carriage: "Change carriages for Duan, Calleader, and the Trossachs.'

do.

It follows as a natural consequence for the 'nhabitants of a country so poor as Scotland to migrate when there are so many rich lends to go to. But every. where that the Scotsman goes he re- tains his characteristics,
