THE RUMANIAN SOLDIER.
A BRAVE AND INDOMITABLE FIGHTER.
He would hardly do for the Long Valley. But then, be, or those who make him, do not intend him for show. The primary idea is work, and this idea is followed to the last. As a marching man, I do not suppose there is any soldier of any other land to whom he cannot, when necessary, give points and a beating, and he will do it on a scrap of maize meal boiled but a few minutes, and a little ditchi-water. On service, it is true, he is fed on black bread and soup made of beans with a little, a very little, meat, and when, he has this, he, the peasant soldier at least, thinks he is faring reyally, for at home the aforesaid maize porridge is all he eats, with, perhaps, an ho onion er so now and then, and, if is very lucky, a bit of meat on Sundays and holidays. The Rocmanian peasant does not speak of meat times; he has no specific word for breakfast, dinner, He says it is time for his word for the maize food
or
he is ever ready for.
He will march, if he is ordered to, till he drops, and this carrying more in the way of equipment and ammunition thau any other European soldier, with no musio of the band to cheer him; only, perhaps, some of the soldiers my playi their native wooden whistles, or they will join in chorus in the old war songs of long age or in their peasant duties.

The blouse and tunic havo two breast pockets with buttons, and two in the skirt, slanted to meet his hands. His footgear is a pair of heavy, com- fortable Ree boots, reaching over his ankles, in which his trousers, narrowed down for the purpose, find a home. This idea is borrowed from his neighbour and arch enemy, the Hungarian, with whom In fact, his whole he is now at grips equipment is the outcoins of careful His study of that of other natiors, haversack is of strong canvas, the water bottle (of tin) fitting into a pocket on the outside of it and thus saving a strap. His knapsack is of strong canvas, much the colour of his uniform, and he carries his ammunition in fourclip pockets much us his new ally, the British Tommy, does His weapon is the Mannlicher and short bayunet.
I said bis footgear was the ankle-boot, but be also wears in preference, when his commanders and the, weather allow, the native sandal with thongs tied half- way up his calf; and admirable for marching it is, except in wet weather, when it ships. The cavalry, too, have adopted putties, always of the same colour as the uniform.
He is as brave as a lion, this Rou- manian soldier, and whether he be the very spick and an officer from Calen Victoria, or the rough peasant front the Baragan or the Olt, all have in their veins a certain amount of the same blood as flowed in Trajan's legionaries, for it is from these Roman colonists that they descend und of which they are so justly prond; wherefore he is a bony fighter. Unly now at Turtukai, against five times their number of Bulgars and Germans, for four days and nights they fought unceasingly, most of them, it is proudly related, never able to stop to eat or drink for three days and three nights, only getting an occasional drink passed along when lull in the frightful fighting occurred, never having a moment's rest "If to touch the food brought to them. we stopped firing a moment they were on us," I was told by one of the wounded The dead back from the great fight. Nor is it only the peasant who is such a good soldier. Among the regiments, at Tartukaj was one recruited in Bucharest, in the ranks of which are to be found alf the apaches, corner lads, and "such like of Bucharest. No one regi- wild fowl

Nor is the dandy officer, whom the tourist or occasional visitor to the capital always saw, any but a fighter. He is proving a splendid leader of his men, and, where necessary, displays reckless courage, as a dozen tales from both frontiers confirm
The wounded, back in some hundreds from Turtukai, show & wonderful spirit, and all ask to be cured of their wounds to get back at the "brigands of Bulgars, as they term them. There is reason for this adjective. In Romanian Dobrudja, in the Bulgarian villages, when it was known that war was declared against Austria--Austria, let it be noted, and not Bulgaria the inhabitants, without pre- vious warning, attacked the weak parties of Roumanian soldiery in them with soythes, hatchets, knives or what not inflicting hundreds of fearful wounds, the women, and even children, joining in the butchery of the military, who were belpless against these latter.
THE BLOOD is the LIFE of the FLESH
Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills-What they are and what they do. Their Four Principal Ingredients.
It is an established fact that all diseases spring from one source, namely; Impurity of the Blood. Therefore our strength, health, and life depend upon the vital fluid. When the various passages become clogged, and do not act in perfect harmony with the different Functions of the body, the blood loses its action, becomes thick, corrupted, and diseased, thus causing pains, sickness, and distress of every name; our strength is exhausted; and if Nature is not assisted in throwing off the stagnant humours, the blood will become choked and cease to act, and thus our light of life will be extinguished. How important, then, that we should keep the various passages of the body free and open, and if assistance is necessary to have at hand that invaluable remedy, Dr. MORSE'S INDIAN ROOT PILLS, manufactured from plants and roots which grow around the mountain cliffs in Nature's garden, for the health and recovery of diseased man.
One of the roots from which these Pills are made is a SUDORIFIC, which opens the pores
of the skin, and assists Nature in throwing out the finer parts of the corruption within. The second is a plant which is an EXPECTORANT that opens and unclogs the passage to the lungs, and thus in a soothing manner performe its duty by throwing off the phlegm and other humours from the lungs by copious spitting.
The third is a DIURETIC, which gives ease and double strength to the Kidneys; thus encouraged they draw large amounts of impurity from the blood, which is thrown out bountifully by the urinary or water passages, and which could not have been discharged in any other way.
The fourth is a CATHARTIC, and accompanies the other properties of the Pills while engaged in purifying the blood, and the coarser particles of impurity which cannot pass by the other outlets are thus taken up and conveyed off in large quantities by the rels.

- From the foregoing it is shown that Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills not m stomach, but become united with the blood, for they find the way to e completely root out and cleanse the system from all impurity, and the lif which is the blood becomes perfectly healthy; consequently all sickness and pain are from the system, for they cannot remain when the body becomes pure and clean.
Du. Monse's INDIAS ROOT PILLS are an efficient, reliable, and safe remedy placed on the market at a price within the reach of all. The Pills being sugar-coated, are pleasant to take, and retain their full medicinal properties. They are pucked in amber-coloured bottles-not in cheap wooden er pasteboard boxes-and are thus always fresh and clean, impervious to Moisture, unaffected by climatic conditions, and do not deteriorate by keeping us all liquid medicines du.
