Six-The Chancellor, in bia speech at the Congregation last Thursday, said: The Arts course is conducted on prin- ciples having for their object a training for a commercial and administrative career."
This 1 consider quite sound in view of modern requirements, but I should like to make a suggestion in regard to this course. It seems to nie that no course, of training with the above object in view can possibly be complete unless it in
·cludes elementary Natural Science.
The rieglect of even the rudiments of seience by our Administrators has been of great value to Germany during the present war. This is well seen in the tardy declaration of cotton as contraband and in the speech of Sir Edward (now Viscount) Grey, fifteen months after war began, that it had recently been discover ed that glycerin (which is necessary for -explosives) could be obtained from fats. We had been letting fats go into Ger- many to be made into explosives for killing our manhood, merely because our administrators were ignorant of one of the most elementary facts of science.
The same ignorance and lack of in ters in science by our commercial men Ja largely responsible for much cur trade going to Germany, and prevents them understanding or appreciating the points of view of their scientific experts. For the above reasons I should like to advocate the incorporation into the Arts courge of an obligatory training in Elementary Natural Science.
