alep, which are being taken at home to strengthen our armies in the feld, have, as I mentioned a week or two ago, resulted in a good deal of heart- searching among the younger members of our local community, some of whom have threatened to resign their positions unless they receive an authoritative assurance that, their presence here is still regarded as indispensable. As has ni ready been pointed out in this column it would obviously be foolish to send home men who cannot be replaced while troops. from home are sent out here, and the logic of this seems to be recognised. At the same time there is a widespread feeling that, in view of the great demand which Die war is making on our mán power, the defence of the Colony should be. 31. S. auxiliary forces. Perhaps the Govern- ment will make a pronouncement on this subject shortly.
That was a rather disquieting statement made at the Hongkong Police Court the other day, to the effect that 44 small-pox. eases bril been dumped in the street in one district. Those who committed the offence were very properly fined, but one cannot help thinking that the Chinese often sin in these matters through ignor- ance; and, though this may be no exeuse in law, it is worthy of consideration, for prevention is better than punishment. A for years ago it was suggested that, in the event of epidemics of small-pos or other infectiois diseases breaking out in the Colony, the poorer class Chinese householders should be served with notices describing the symptoms of such disease, the proper procedur to adopt when those symptoms manifested themselves, and the penalties incurred by neglect to follow the instructions given. I have never beard that this suggestion has been carried into effect, but it seems to me that it might be warth while to give it a trial. It is necessary to do something to combat the dangerous ignorance of the most elementary laws of health and hygiene which the dumping of dead and infected bodies in public places reveals.
The men's meetings held by Bishop Norris during the past week under the auspices of the National Mission of Re- pentance and Hope have been remarkably well attended each evening. Lively in-.

In a letter to the Straits Chinese Bri tish Association the Hon. Mr. F., S. He was expected in Peking on Monday, but he broke his journey at Hsuchowfu in order to have a conversation with the redoubtable Chang Haun, and did not reach Tientsin until Tuesday afternoon.
