GERMAN MACHINATIONS IN CHINA.
In spite of the war German activity bas by no menzis ceased in China, (ob- serves Eastern Engineering). On the cou trary, a lively propaganda is being car ried on there, not only by German traders themselves, but by the officials of the Legation at Peking and the various consular officers throughout the country. Not content with making, every prepa- 138.00 ration for resuming business after the war, 1.05 we learn that Germany is actually sup

There can be no question that German traders have got their eyes fixed 175.00 on China fer exploitation after the war, 10.00 and they are leaving no steps antaken to 50.00 enable them to realise their object. It is also reliably stated that German merchants in China have secured sufficient, contracts during the war to give them a good com- mercial standing, immediately the war ia over. These, it is true, have mustly been A secured by graft and sharp practice, traveller recently returned from Chian stated recently that at the beginning of the war the Germans refrained from 134.88 quoting on any large contraet, but lately most of the largest contracts have fallen into German hands.
