NEED MALAYAN PLANTERS FEAR A PROBABLE INVASION ” In view of the interest since created and of the numeroas rumours that aro
rife, 'it is a pity that the discussion at the last meeting of the Planters' Assotia tion of Malaya should have led those nor less interested into nothing more than a cul-de-sac on the subject of the alienation of large areas of agricultural land on the Federated Malay States, says the Times of Malaya. At that meet- ing it was reported that an assurance "had been given by the Chief Secretary that no land up to the beginning of July had been alienated, but as the result of inquiries made by the Secretary of the P.A.M. it waLE ascertained that, ap parently, 20,000 acres of land had been applied for on behalf of the Goodyear Company of the United States, although no formal application had been either As to the made or granted so far. United States General Rubber Company, which was suspected of having either applied for land or bought a large estate, he learned that up to then they had done nothing, and he had good reason for believing that for the present they did not contemplate doing anything.
In this connexion the opinion. of the Kuala Selangor District Association recorded that the granting of titles in respect of land to any person or persons not of British Empire. is inadvisable, taking into con- sideration existing circumstances and the certainty that in the future there will be a large amount of bond fide British capital available for investment in this Beyond an expression of country. opinion that this seemed more a matter for discussion by the Paris Conference than by the P.A.M., nothing more was said on the subject at the meeting in question by the very public body called into being to deal with such matters.

POSSIBLE CORNERING OF MARKET,
A month and a half has since elapsed without the aforementioned rubiours being allowed to rest, rather are they on the increase, and, as our correspon dence columns have borne testimony, the feeling among planters themselves is becoming more acute than before at the prospect of an American invasion " with a possible cornering of the rubber market.

IN CHINA. While it would be futile at the to present juncture to speculate as the date of the termination of the war in Europe, it is of the highest impurtance that British merchants and manufacturers should keep a keen eye on the commercial and industrial problems that will arise on the conclusion of peace. This is particularly true of the great neutral, market of China, which presents vast openings for the extension of its foreign trade. The time for action is now; to wait until the war is over will be too late! There is no occh sion to reiterate all that Germun traders achieved in China in pro-war days Many of their methods were distasteful to British business men, and would never by mitated by them; but, on the otherprise, and pluck Dr. Wu (or "Tuck" band, there are other directions in which we might learn profitable lessons from our Teutonic competitors. It must be borne in mind that, in spite of the war German activity has by no means ceased in Ching. On the contrary, a lively pro- pagando is being carried on there, not only by German traders themselves, but. by the officials of the Legation at Peking and the various consular officers through out the country. It is also said that, despite the blockade, German exports to some extent, at any rate, continue. A move in the right direction has been made by the formation of groups of manufacturers who have combined either to carry on the pioneering work in China in conjunction with the merchants, or to sell their own products direct to the Chinese. This more particularly applies to the engineering industry. But there Bre further measures which must be taken if British traders are to hold their own in the China market. It is agreed HUT by those who have examined the situation on the spot that there is an absolute necessity for a closer co-operation between the manufacturer and merchant in the United Kingdom, based on mutual re cognition of each other's aims and sphere of activity, so that efforts may be co ordinated to the common end of securing the trade of the future. It is recom mended that more should be done by our manufacturers in paying attention to the special requirements of the Chinese
