Wo understand that the War Savings Association has secured a considerable number of new members this month (says

that the inhabitants were anfeignedly glad to cos them. Consequently, there was prompt response when we issued our appeal for funds to render their sojourn | thỏ N. C. Daily News) and that it now in our midst a little more pleasant than includes subjects of the Chinese Republic it would otherwise be to a civilian sudden among its supporters, ly reduced to a soldier's rate of pay in a Colony where money has (or had at that time) only about half the purchasing power of its sterling equivalent at Home. In a very few days we received upwards of $500 in numerous small suns, and, having thus secured an encouraging start, we were fortunate in enlisting the operation of a small Committee which has been responsible for the collection of subscriptions and the administration of the Fund from that time until now. The British American Tobacco Co., Ltd., acting under instructions from the Secretary of the Hongkong Cigarette and Tobacco Fund, have forwarded 30,000 cigarettes to the military authorities for distribution among the European Troops stationed in the Colony.

H.E. the Governor and Lady May were" At Home" yesterday to residents of the Colony, and a large number took ad- vantage of the ideal weather to spond a very pleasant afternoon at Mountain Lodge. Tea was served upon the terrace, after which the guests amused themselves according to their bent, some playing tennis and lawn golf, while others contented themselves with watching the games or strolling through the grounds. The party dispersed shortly after o'clock.

Altogether the sum of 81,874.91 has been raised, to which must be added 819.70) bank in terest, giving a total of 83,683.04. It is perfectly safe to say that there would. have been no difficulty in obtaining a much larger amount if that had been TALCUM ecessary, but at one time the Committee, having in hand a sum sufficient to cover several months' expenditure, decided not to accept any more money in view of the demands made upon the generosity of the public for other equally worthy objects. In point of fact the Fund has closed with an unexponded balance of $296.81. Ont of this surplus 800 has been voted to the Soldiers' and Sailors' Homo, and the re- mainder, $246.81, has been given as a special donation to the Garrison Recr tion Club, which is sorely in need of financial assistance owing to the special conditions brought about by the war. It is hoped that the subscribers will approve of this course, which was only adopted

PROSPERITY IN MANCHURIA.

The harvest throughout the whole of that we have had for a dozen years (Bay Manchuria is magnificent, the boat by far the local correspondent of the Daily News) Every kind of crop is much above the average and everywhere the people are well satisfied. There has been a rapid rise in rents in Harbin and many large firms from China Proper have. opened suencies there. This is thought to be with a view to getting a share in the big export trade in beans, bean oil and cereals which is expected to take place to Russia.
