duty from the morning of Sunday, 24th September, to Sunday, 1st Octo ber? Go. H.K.V.R.

An order placed by a British firm at On duty till the morning of Sunday, 24th Hankow for the purchase of 30,000 cattle front Central China to ho killed and pre-On pared for the use of the British Array at the front has led the Roman authori tics to pince an embargo upon the ex- portation of bactic from the province. This huge demand it is “fenredmay seriously denude the province of cattle and injuriously affect the welfare of Houan farmers in tilling their lands.

Before the issue of the order prohibit ing the export of cattle, the Governor of Honan first instructed the magistrates of different districts to institute an investi- gation into the number of cattle owned by farmers. The reports, sent in show tha Honan is not plentifully supplied with cattle and to meet the huge British order will entail disastrous consequence on the agricultural pursuits of the people. The Governor found that the provinces could spare only six hundred head of cattle for exportation. He thereupon issued orders that only this number might be sold to the British merchants. This prohibition has caused the British Consul at Hankow to lodge a protest with the Watchisonu against the Governor's em- bargo, The British Consul at Hankow states that, according to information he has received, the Germans have exported several thousand head of cattle from Honan. Replying to the Kaichiaop u about the alleged purchases of cattle by the Germans, the Governor of Honam ategorically denied the report. Not 263.80 | antisfied with the nuswer from the Gov- 500.00 ernor of Honau, the British Consul at 200.00 Hankow as requested the Waichinopu to 100.00 appoint a special official to visit the different districts in Honam together with 49.00 him in order to institute an independent
