OPENING STATEMENT.
Mr. Cruse, oglining the case, said that a man who would be calied was approached by the defendant, on the last day of February, when he called in business at the defendant's offic at Messrs. Percy Smith, Seth & Fleuring, with a view to a subsequent meeting between him (defen dant) and a foreigner named Ribeiro. That meeting nu held on March 2nd and 3rd, the last named date he was engaged to act as a sort of shroff for the business at a salary of $40 a month. A witness would say that he was sent to a gold-leaf shop to gain for the sale of goldenf which panned out at $8,000. which was just the amount of money for which the cheques had been forged.
