JAUNDICE
ITS CAUSE AND CURE.
This distressing complaint so common in all hot countries is caused by the Bile overflowing in the Blood. It is not an in- dependent disorder but the symptoms of other complaints which cause the Bile to overflow in this manner instead of entering the intestines to perform its mission of aiding in the digestion and assimilation of food. Jaundice 'causes the skin and eyes to become yellow, and vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, or constipation, loss of appetite, bad taste in the mouth, flatulence, belch- ing and pains in the stomach may all be accompanying symptoms. The disordered condition of the Liver is the most common cause of this complaint and a remedy that will reach the Liver is the only effective one. Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills reach the Liver as no other remedy does, speedily causing the Bile to flow. Undbic to eat or sleep.
through its proper channel. They get at the cause of the complaint driving the poison out of the blood, and toning the entire system. The Times of India's correspondent, writing from Pietermaritzburg, on Decem- ber 18th, saya:-" The instant and pro- nounced ancoss of the movement for send- ing a contingent of 10,000 men to fight the Germans in East Africa has been such as to surprise everyone. Not only have the 10,000 mon wanted been quickly got, but the recruiting rally has been so productive that two additional regiments of infantry- are to be formed for the campaign, making. a total of 12,000 men, On the top of the sending of a contingent to Europe and the trouble we have with the Boor nationalists, this result is really gratifying. This con- Lingent should with the local forces in the British East Africa Protectorate, be suf- ficient to put an end at once to the present harassing operations of the Germans and their attempt on the British Railway line, and ensure their decisive defeat at a reason- sbly early date. NEW THREATS FOR BELGIUM.
The North-German Gazette publishes under the heading The Traitors in Bel- gium a long official article which is op- pärontly intended to prepare the world for even harsher measures on the part of the German authorities in Belgium, The article gives a sensational account of the extent of espionage in Belgium, laying spe- cial stress upon the assertion that the most important parts are played by It is argued that the Germaña women. might very well dispense with triala alto- gether, and shoot antpacted persons at sight. "THE BRAVE LITTLE PRIEST."""
HOW THE IRISH GUARDS' CHAPLAIN DIED. The Rev. John Gwynn, S.J., Chaplain to the Irish Guarda, died of wounds which he received while in a dug-out with the Colonel, The following account of his heroic devotion to duty during the fighting round Hill 70 is given by an Irish Guards
man: A
Father Gwynn was known among the boys as the brave little priest. Early in the war he was seriously wounded, but re- fused to return to England. During the ferrible fighting recently Father Gwynn was again at his post. I saw him just be fore he died. Shrapnel and bullets wore being showered upon us in all directions. “Hundreds of our lads dropped. Father. Gwynn was undismayed. He seemed to be all over the place trying to give the Last Sacrament to the dying. Once I thought he was buried alive for a shell exploded with in u few yards of where he was, and the. next moment I saw nothing but a grost heap of earth. The plight of the wounded concealed beneath was harrowing, Out of the ground came cries of Father, Father, Father, from those who were in their death agonies. Then as if by a miracle Füller Gwynn was seen to fight his way through the earth. He must have been severely in- jured, but he went on blessing the wounded and hearing their confessions The last 1 saw of him was kneeling by the side of a German soldier. It was a scene to ke you cry. The shells continued to explode about the wounded, but they could not stop a little English priest from doing his duty even to a dying German."
