Almost unparalleled disaster was caused in the Kwangtung Province by the flooding of the West River, Some thousands of people lost their lives and many thousands more were made homeless. A devastating firo at Canton, in which it is estimated addod that 10,000 people perished, to the misery and desgistion. Every thing possible was done in the Colony towards organising relief work.
