IN WID OF BRITISH WAR ORPHANS

In splendid weather, a most successful and fruitful bazaar, followed by a con- cert, in aid of the orphans of British sailors and soldiers, took place in the grounds of St. Andrew's Church Hall on Saturday afternoon. The idea was con- coived by Mrs. Gill, who speedily put it into practical effect and brought it to splendid fruition. Mrs, Gill and her able and onthusiastic resistant, Sister Ruther ford, of the Military Hospital, are to be heartily congratulated on the result of the function, which is expected finally to realise the high figure of $2,000,

Lady May, who opened the bazaar, was received by Mre. Gill and Miss Ruther ford at the entrance to the grounds and was escorted to the top of the steps, where a number of young ladies, attired to re present the various Powerg in the Allied cause, were arranged in a semi-circle.

Miss J Jack (England) welcoming her. ladyship, said We, the Allies, on be half of Mrs. Grand Miss Rutherford, present this basket of flowers a acknowledgement of your kindness in coming to Kowloon to open this fancy sale in aid of the orphans of our sailors and soldiers."

An

rise to the rumours to which reference has BAZAAR AND CONCERT AT been made. If China had seen fit to take the steps indicated no one could have blamed her. She has nothing to be grateful for to Germany in the past and no favours to hope for from Germany in the future. Nor is Germany in the least likely to be able to follow the Mailed fist policy when the war is over. It is at the present time that she is most to be feared, for, in her des peration, she has made her name synon mous with unscrupulousness from one end of the world to the other. Apart from her attempts to subern the leaders of public opinion in South Africa, to sow sedition in India, to encourage strikes in England, and to foment frouble in Russin, she has overrun Belgium, plunged the Turks and Bulgarians into a war for which they have no inclination, crented internecine

and strife in Persia,

trencherously Abused the hospitality of America. There is, indeed, no enormity which she is not prepared to commit if it is likely to serve ber purpose. She has long ago spread her poisonous propaganda in China and Macao, and it is only a few weeks since n shipment of arms intended for India was discovered in Shanghai. These, of course are blows aimed at the Allies, but the Ger- mans would not hesitate to involve China in their machinations if they though that by doing so they could gain any advantage No compunction about disturbing the peace of a neutral nation would hinder them from doing anything that might in any At the degree embarrass the Allies. moment German-owned and German sub sidised journals in China are industriously engaged in trying to foment friction between Great Britain and Japan. They have, for exampe, spread the report that Entente with China has been arranged behind the back of Japan, and to give it verisimilitude, they bave se forth the terms in detail. We can, of course, afford to smile at these efforts, which we mention only to illustrate the insatiable appetite of our enemies for mischief. But when the Germans direct
