AN OLD SCIENCE REVIVED,

BLOODLESS SURGERY AND. THE

CURE OF WAR WOUNDS,

That strange old science of blood ess surgery which caused something of a sensation in the medical world a few years ago, when it was, so to speak, re discovered, has been responsible for many wonderful cures of displaced limbs, of stiffened joints and paralysed nerves among soldiers during the war,

Some interesting cases were told to i Dail Graphic representative by Mr. Frank Matthews, the well-known joint specialist, of 90, Charing Cross Road. One man came to me from India," he said, with a fractured nock. He had actually broken his neck, but it was one of those rare gaers of partial recovery. though he would always be deforined, with head thrust forward immorable and a stiffened neck. It was a very in teresting but at the same time a delicate business, needing extreme care, for a mis- take might mean the snapping of the spinal cord and death. I put him under the X raya and then began a very gentle and gradual treatment. Now he is per- fectly right, and he recently wrote me letter full of gratitude."

WOODEN-LEQQED MEN ON MARWAL DRYING,

LAFY,"

Sir James Kingston Fowler, speaking at the opening of the winter session of the Medical School at Middesex Hospital, rẽ. lated some curious incidents of life in a military hospital.

It was, he said, almost a doctor's ideal to see plenty of empty beds, and in one case in Franco a medical director went around the hospital and saw a man who looked very well,

"How are you?" he asked,

Quite well, thank you," replied the soldier.

"Well, would you like to go home?"

Yes, sir."

"All right. I will have your boots fetched, and will see how you get on,"

"All right, air but you need only bring one, because I had a leg off the day before yesterday.”

Sergeant Billy" Wells nad Lieut. Meloroy have also been recent patients. In the latter case the nerves of one part of the leg were paralysed, and there was no deeling or use in the joint. This was caused by the after-effect of a shrapnel Wound. It was considered unlikely that the injury could be cured, but Lieut. MeEnroy is now quite fit again.

Another officer is now recovering after serice of strange mishaps. He had a

THE CENSOR ON ROBERT

BROWNING,

Sir John Simon was asked during a discussion ол tho Censor's famous emendation of Kipling, whether the salary of the official concerned was still a charge on the people of this country. The language actually employed was stronger and more colloquial and it may have been due to this fact that (in the words of the Parliamentary report), "no answer was returned to the honour able number" The honourable member, to wait. The however, has not had long tined to first hand account of the fighting at. Hallush on October 13th. In the course of it (says the journal in an editorial) our Correspondent at Headquarters, describ ing the storm of bombs, shells, gases, and other means of destruction which fell upon the enemy, was rash enough to quote Browning's

Twenty-nine distinct damnations,
