DEATH OF HON. MR. E. A. HEWETT, C.M.G. SUDDEN END TO ACTIVE CAREER.

LONG CONNECTION WITH THE FAN EAST.

It is with feelings of profound regret that we record the death, under painfully sudden circumstances, of the Hon. Mr. E. A. Hewett, C.M.Q., which sad event took place at the Government Civil Hospital at 12.40 p.m. yesterday. Mr. Hewett was attending to his duties as Superintendent of the P. and O. Company as late as Saturday last, and even on Sunday he appeared to be in his usual health," He was confined to his room with severe cold, however, on Monday, and on Tues- The day this was diagnosed as malaria. symptoms developed an alarming wanner, and Mr. Hewett was removed to the Government Civil capital on Tuesday evening, when it was realised by the medical staff that he was in an extremely serious condition. All that medical skill was capable of was done, but, despite this, the patient sank rapidly and passed away

as stated, dosth being ascribed to malarial fever, with complica tions.

We have received for publication the following correspondence relating to the recent meeting of the Hongkong Licensing Board and the subsequent resignation ef the Unofficial Members owing to two of their decisions having been reversed by the Governor-in-Council:

SIR-I am directed to transmit for favour of publication in your columns the enclosed copy of the reply of the Govern ment to the four Un-official Members of the Licensing Board who have severed their connection with that Boord, and a copy of their reply.

3-Your petitioner believes that the reason for the refusal of his said applica tion is that he was born in Germany, and that, were it not for the facts hereinafter set forth (which facts were evidently un- known to all the members of the Board), he might be deemed to be an alien enemy. 4.Although your petitioner was born. in Germany, he left that country in the year 1837 with Exod intention of never returning thereto, either for the purpose of serving for an allotted time in the Gor- man army, as is required by German law of Gorman subjects, or for any other pur- pose whatsoever.
