16 is impossible to say what plans will be concerted for thwarting the designs of the enomy in this theatre of war, but wo know that their preparation is engaging the anxious consideration of the Entente Fowers By maintaining the pressure on the other fronts it may be made impossible for Germany and Austria to detach any considerable body of men for the opera- tions in the Balkans. The severe bombard- ment twice inflicted on Varna and Bourgas by the Ituzaian Fleet in the Black Sea may be the prelude to a Russian landing in force at either or both of those ports. An Italian intervention on a large scale may also be within the pale of possibility
while if Roumania could be induced to throw in her lot with the Allies the situa- tion would speedily wear a very different complexion. Populer feeling in Romania is said to be strongly in favour of the Entente, although old difficulties with Russia are not forgotten. Certainly up to the present Roumania has shown no disposition to aid German plans by allow ing supplies to go over her lines to Turkey, but has preserved an attitude of strict neutrality. But whatever
Serbia may be assured, in the words of Mr. ASQUITH, that her independence is regarded as one of the essential objects of the British, French and Russian Allianco,
WATSON developments the future may hold in store,
