THE HORSE IN THE WAR..
So soldom do we read in the accounts from the various fields of battle any reference to the invaluable service rendered by the horse, that many must have formed the impression that the horse has beou almost entirely superceded by the motor. Generals, whe in the older wars, inspected their lines on prancing steeds, now dash along in motor ears; dispatches are carried by then on motor cycles or in motor cars, and one derives from the reports the impression that practically all the haulage work is [876
done by motor traction man power. But an extremely interest ing article in the Nineteenth Century shows how orroneous is the idea that forses have become unnecessary to a modern army, We suppose this false impression has been due not so much to the omission to dwell upon the services of the draught horses in the descriptive accounts of the battlefield, as to what we may call the over-emphasis laid on mechanical haulage, due to the fact

Remount Department, as Mr. FuIRHOLME, whs, we believe, is identified with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The work which the Veterinary Corps of the British Army is doing in this war murks a great advance on anything of the kind previously attempted, and as the Nineteenth Century zrticle whether we look at it from an economic [1 humane point of view, it must bo granted that it is magnificent work to prevent unnecessary wastage of animal life; economically because every horse cured and saved meaus another weapon in the fight; humanely, because it is only paying some part of the debt we owe to these horses which we have taken and used to our van end.

BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY, HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL OPEN-AIR FETE.
The Fee, in aid of the British Redh Cross Society and the Order of St. John of Jerusslem drew an extermely large crowd to the Public Gardens last event ing, notwithstanding the threatening weather, and as a result a substantiel sum will be forwarded to support the noble werk of the two organisations for whose enefit the Fete hul been arranged. There were some noticeable alterations in the lighting and decorative scheme which added much to the pleasing general

The temporary stairways erected. on either side of the steps-leading, to the upper terrace proved of great conveni- ence to the patrons of the beto, and much of relieved the troublesome congestion the permanent stairway frequent hitherto Prominently displayed in the western end of the lower terrace was an illuminated representation of a Rod Cross motor-par.
