THE PIFLE GOODS TRADE.

Excluding opium, piece goods consti- tute the largest factor in the input trade, and the year has proved altogether disastrous to it.. According to the state nents of those interested in the trade, this is attributed principally to the European war and the very high rate of exchange at the beginning of the year, as well as to overstocks of various kinds of goods. This last was the result of heavy orders placed in 1913, which began to arrive the early part of 1914. Maay contracts in the middle of the year were not carried out on account of the crisis in Europe, and the shipments, especially froin Germany, were practically suspend- ed soon after the declaration of war. resulting in the non-arrival of goods that were intended for the Chinese New Year market.

AMERICAN FLOUD DISPLACED IN SHANGHAI PRODUCT.

The Customs statistics of the importa tion of flour in 1914 show 50,303,034 lbs., #s against. 8,981,836 lbs. in 1913.
