WHAT WE ARE DOING IN
THE GREAT WAR,
SPLENDID TRIBUTE BY AMERICAN-
PAPER.
The following account has been offioi- What Great Britain has done and 18 ally issued in Paris:-
After the landing of the Anglo-Frenching form by the Chicago Daily News, doing in the war is summarised in strik troops in Callipoli the operations became which, says the Daily Chronicle, has very active all long the front from the published more special war, news than Gulf of Saros to the Dardanellen. The any paper in Amexion Hore says the Allied troops fint repulsed a number of journal, are some of the things Great attacks delivered with extreme violence Britain is doing-- by a brave and determined onomy. They
1. Holding the seas for the ships of her then assumed the offensive along the Allies an well whole front on May 6 in order to clear a zone sufficient for their bivounes and to place the landing-beaches outside the roach of the artillery fire. This second phase lasted May 6, 7, and 8, and the désired result was attained after heavy fighting on the afternoon of May 8.
Since that date, and more particularly during the last fortnight of May, the character of the operations has changed. The general attacks have given place to a slower advance prepared with care and methodically conducted. Ground. has gradually been gained in a manner which renders our positions impregnable. The nature of the ground renders the task of our troops very difficult. The southern part of the Gallipoli Peninsula, as far as Kilid Bahr, where the narrowing of the straite and the works on the two banks har the passage of the Fleet, presents the form of a triangle. The base of this triangle between Kabatepe and Kilid Bahr measures six miles. Midway rises the peak of Achibabu, 800ft. high, the outlying portion of which, stretching neross the penipaula, constitutes a very powerful defensive position. The ground- in front slopes gently, and the artillery as well as the infantry fire is able to sweep it.. This is the battlefield upon which the Expeditionary Corps has been operating for six weeks.
The narrowness of the front precludes possibility of manœuvring. All the works of the enemy bave to be attacked and carried by frontal assaults. The condi: tions of the fighting recall those of Torres Vedras (Peninsular campaign) in 1810 and of Chatolja (the lines defending Con- stantinople on the north) two years ago. The front, however, is still more re- stricted, The Turks have solidly or ganised their resistance.
The region is honeycombed with deep entrenchments flanked by machine guna and protected by barbed wire entangle ments, and other obstacles, ·Such works cannot be rushed. They have gradually to be approached by working from point to point.

With the most unsparing, ever known, how many mo? Well, with enough." To bear some people talk, one would suppose that upon Britain were laid the duty of defending every land but her own.
The Chicago Daily News continues :--- ̧ Britain's wealth and sex power and military power are the one sure safe guard against the triumph of Gerninay's unparalleled war machine.
