HONGKONG, SHARE MARKET. | KWANGTUNG FLOOD RELIEF EUROPE'S DEBT TO AMERICA,

Mesaru, Vernon & Smyth in their kly share report dated 23rd July, 30, state Homewed firmness with a tendency to urther improvement prevails for all cal investment securities, whilst in the Speculative section the sensation of the period under review has been the rapid advance in Indos, which, after closing with sellers at 8118 a week ago, havo boomed to a cash quotation of 9148, and are apparently still in request. Rubbers and Shells have also received attention and a fair businces has been transacted, Bar Silver closes at 227-10 for ready Sterling T.T. at 1/9, and Shanghai, T.T. 178). The Bank's buying rate for 3 d/s bills on Bbangbai is 798.

London is apparently still unable to offer any shares, and again a sterling quotation cannot be given. Douglases have ruled somewhat quieter during the interval but at the close are in strong request at $55, and a higher rate would no doubt be paid for ready China and Forward delivery. and Masilas are in defaand at 40 cents. OiLs. Shells have been bought from London al 87/0, and are wanted locally at 67/0. Langkaw with Fow fluctuations dose in request at Ts. 28.

AUSTRIA AND SEPARATE PEACE.

WHY GERMANY HAS NOT DECLARED WAR.

The correspondent of 11 Secolo at Milan has had an. interview with a well- informed personality, who explained why Germany has not yet declared war against Italy. He says it appears that pourpar- lera are proceeding between Berlin and Viena, in which they undertake not to The Kaiser conclude a separato peace. does not want to make a move against Italy until his ally has committed herself to the sacrifice for his advantage of her last man, her last dahler, her last inch of territory. There are in Austria, how- ever, people who do not wish their country to enter upon any such engagement, fore- seeing the abyss into which the country would thereby be thrown.

It is known for certain that strange! overtures have been made and renewed recently with the Powers of the Triple Eatonto on behalf of the subjects of the Emperor Francis Joseph, who do not wish to sacrifice, the fater of the Duel Monarchy to the unmeasured pride of the Kaiser and the blindness of their own month. To save their own country these pe ple would be disposed to sacrifico the German Alliance, and even if necessary the House of Hapsburg.

BRITISH HEADQUARTERS IN THE FIELD.

June 14. Beyond the last farmhouse was a fold the size of St. James's Square, filled with! precise rows of bars-headed, half-dressed soldiers, sitting on their blankets like Mahommedans at prayer.

"That's the H.A.C.," suid my guide, and vanished.

None of the Honourable Artillerymen looked up from their meditations us I

walkod between them. Some wore trousers Rad no shirt; others varied the picture by wearing a shirt and no trousers; and all of them were evidently very tired.

The H.A.C. arrived from the trenches just six hours before I discovered their resting-place. Early that morning, they began the long, silent march to the shaded field where they halted for a time before going into billets. The march from the trenches is always a great test of endurance,

They come away with nerves unshaken and moral unbroken; they are simply tired, Had it been necessary the H.A.C. could have still hung on for days and nights with the same imperturbable calm, killing Germans with great skill, as they did during the eight days of crack shooting, at loopholed breast works; but the moment they spread themselves over the green field where I found them at noon they yielded to the luxury of absolute relaxation, and you would have thought them paralysed by fatigue..

THE CHANGE OF WÄR.”

I wonder how many friends * this famous regiment would have recognised. the cropped, unshaven assemblage sitting on Army blankets in a cow pasture? They had nothing in common with tho spick-and-span young gentlemen

who

used to appear in glittering guards of honour at the Guildhall, and were generally voted the smartest Territorial foot soldiers in the country. They looked, in fact, as hard and uncompromising a set of ruffians as could be found anywhere. in the area of the world war.

When the H.A.C. took over the portion of trenches assigned them the enemy was engaged in improving his defence amid certain ruins. Sandbags were brought up at night and utilised as a breast work Clan Macnaughton, Itolo, Rhios, Berlin

COMBINED FARADE,

A stuff officer came down one day last week to inspect the new German defences, and his contempt for our men'e mark manship cost him his life.

A certain crack shot waited quietly beside his rifle, The German officer came up to the breastwork and looked through The markings a loophole at our tranch on his cap could be plainly seen. There The bullet was a shot and a scream! hit him squarely in the face.
