PARADE-VENTRAL POLICE STATION), Wednesday, July 7th-Nos. 1 and 2 Chinese Platoons:
It is not, however, primarily about the conduct of the war that just now public anxiety is felt. The gravity of the task before us is, of course, enough to wake thoughtful men anxions, and as to this I have indicated very briefly the lines upon which men's thoughts are running; but, quite apart from the operations in the field while at the same time closely related to them, there has been the political-apheaval at home. A clange of Government in the midst of a war is, under any circumstance, serious matter, fraught with danger It is inlinitely more and difficulty. serious now than at any previous period in our history, seeing that we are engaged in a life-and-death struggle for our very existenes against what Lord Roberts rightly called a "Lowardly, vicious, and unscrupulous foe."
The downfall of the Liberal Government came with such suddenness that for a while people were almost stupefied. What was the real meaning of this, and the prompt forma tion of a Coalition within a week of the Prime Minister's announcement in the я Coalition Commons that House of Government was not contemplated, nor was it likely to be acceptable* All sorts of reasons have been given to account for the crisis, the full inner history of which, bow ever, niay not be written for many a day to eone. But this much may be said publicly --that it was not wholly due to the alleged salect a fresh victima, and with inconceivable England and Waics, 2,234,776 are uninarried. is not optional. Commanders of the Flatcons shortage of high-explosive shells. The sholl question, if I may say it without levity, was the immediate cause of the political explo sion. The Liberal Government would not have come down on that alone had there been perfect unity among those in power. But there was not perfect unity, and while there was not, perhaps, dissension, there were unfortunate differences. Faced with kach a situation there were only two courses open to the Premier. He had 1) to choose between resignation, which involved plang. ing the country into the turmoil of a General Election-an unthinkable thing in such a war as this-and having the Conservatives to come in (if they could) and do better (also if they could), or (2) to form a Coalition Government. Like a patriotic Englishman
