Mr. Asquith said that from April to the 12th June the daily cost of the war had amounted to £2,000,000, while in the future the Army and Navy expenditure) would expand slightly, and our financial obligations to our Allies increase. Then the daily cost of the war, would be at least £3,000,000.
He asked the country and the in a wider Empire to follow him survey of the situation. The Government had been reconstructed, but he must
express his deep and abiding gratitude to his Liberal culleagues. To part from them was the most painful experience in his public life. An unparalleled situation had to be met, demanding the entire energies of the nation. Consequently, he had to consider how best he could respond to the call of public duty. Our national policy remained unchanged, namely, to pursue the war at any cost to a victorious issue. (Loud cheers.)
